for the last couple of months i have been having reflux like feelings a few times a week. it really only seems to hit whenever i eat things like salsa (especially salsa) and if i ad beer to the mix then ugh. its like a nice sustaining burn in my throat. We had queso made with hot salsa and hot sausage last night and today i woke up and had to pop the tums and a pepcid. Dammit. Guess it may be time to eat better and drink less. SWMBO suggested we start a P90X routine.

Lost a friend of mine to breast cancer yesterday.

My jujitsu teacher's wife. Someone I have known for almost 20 years. She had been battling this cancer for over 11 years now. Back when they discovered it it was already at stage 4, and the first doctor told her there wasnt much point in attempting to treat her since she would only live another 6-12 weeks. She told that doc to stuff it and got a second opinion. They were able to reduce the cancer to the point that she was well again for a long time. She lived an excellent life for the next ~8 years after they got the cancer to the point of control.

About a 2 years ago, it finally came back strong again. She began the long hard fight once again, but she was incredibly weak from the initial battle years ago. Last week she decided she had enough of the chemo they kept pumping in to her. She told the docs to stop. She then threw herself a party and had 30 people over at the house. Well, she told everyone the party was to celebrate her mother's 80th birthday but we all knew what was really going on. She had enough strength to sit up the whole time and talk to her guests.

She passed away yesterday.

Tonight, I hoist for Marcia. An incredible woman who gave everything she had to everyone else in her life. She was an amazing mother and grandmother - and an excellent friend to all who knew her.

Something I had for lunch at BW3's yesterday...got me the trotts all night. I woke up at 2am with farked up heartburn. Got up..took some tums, drank some water, couldnt get back to sleep. Been up ever since. Work all day..then suppose to meet up with the guys for some brews and shots (celebrating my birthday..which was yesterday...43 for those taking notes). And..to top it off...MIL is flying in today for a week long stay.

I wish it was Monday!!

Friends gave us their first ever vinting. It was an elderberry wine. I helped them with the process, talked them through back sweetening (elderberries get dry) and bottling. They gave us a bottle....and I stuck it on our wall wine rack next to the dining room table for easy use during a celebratory dinner. Apparently, the cork blew.

It had to be 3" long with it's legs. It is currently residing in my kitchen. The bug spray I gave him either killed him or I will find a 6' tall mutant roach when I wake up in the morning. I just want to say...It FLEW.

Actually the day was pretty good except for one thing. Since school started again I have had plenty to do, been getting good feedback from students and my boss, and just loving seeing all the college girls in their sundresses. However, my office mate (the department secretary) is being a complete freak again. Today she had a grad student who came to her for help. He'd been sent by someone who thought she might know about a program but she didn't. She was hemming and hawing, giving the poor guy more runaround. I did a quick google search, found some information, and printed it for him. After he left she freaked the F out. Yelled at me for making her look like an idiot. I explained that I was just trying to help and didn't mean to insult her. I even apologized. She kept going off, so I walked out (I had a time sensitive errand to run). She called me an idiot as I was leaving. My boss will totally back me if there is a problem, but it frickin' sucks to work with someone like that. I'm still in a bad mood about it. So, I'll have a couple fingers of bourbon before bed, but I thought I'd vent to you drunkies since I've decided to take the high road. The high road is probably best in the long run, but it is not nearly as satisfying as unloading on this idiot.

Labor Day weekend cooking thread

I'm hosting a big group (15-20) Saturday afternoon/night for pool and college football time.
I just trimmed up a big 17 lb brisket and put it to soak in the marinade, I will toss it on the WSM Saturday around 1-2am for a 3pm Saturday serving.

Along with the brisket:

4 racks of baby backs
4 lbs jalape�o/venison/beef sausage
'tater salad
Cheesy, creamy, tasty 'tater casserole
BBQ baked beans
Mexas' famous pico dip
Jalape�o buttermilk ranch dip
My especial Tex-Carolina BBQ sauce

This is just what I'm throwing down, some other side plus dessert will show up.
I *heart* my WSM but I have noticed that my briskets are dry compared to my big trailer smoker. I'm wondering if I am leaving the brisket on too long, but I hit my 190 internal, then I wrap in foil for a rest.

What about you drunkies? Cooking plans for the holiday?

Netflix DVD

I've had Netflix for about 3 weeks now. I LOOOVVVE the Instant Watch, and would probably pay $8.99 for it alone. I consider the DVD's in the mail almost a free bonus. However, if you're not using Instant Watch, Netflix isn't really a super deal anymore. Years ago, I had the 3-disk plan and I could cycle through 8-12 disks per week. Now with the 1-disk plan I'm only getting 2 disks per week - and that's if I'm rigorous about watching the night I get the thing and mailing it back the next day. For example, I got a disk last Saturday, watched it and mailed it Monday. Netflix received it Tuesday and mailed out the next, which I got yesterday. We watched it last night and sent it back today. They'll mail its replacement tomorrow and I'll get it on Saturday again. Repeat every week and I'm getting 8 disks per month for $8.99. That's a little bit more than Redbox if you return next day.

Fracking

I don't know if this has been discussed, but there is a problem with the drinking water in Dimock, Penn. You can light it on fire.

Gas companies are using a technique called fracking (hydraulic fracturing) to get at the natural gas trapped in the shale deposits in the are. Apparently there is a huge deposit around the great lakes. Well, it looks like one of the downsides to fracking is that they can't contain all the gass they release and its getting into the water supply. So much so that you can fill a bucket from your well, stick a pipe in the lid and light the exposed end on fire.

Of course the gas companies are saying that the process is completely safe, citing some EPA testing back in the 90's, but it sure looks pretty cut and dry to me that if the water wasn't contaminated before they started fracking, and now it is, that something is wrong with the process and the water is contaminated.

Honestly, we have to do something about fossil fuels. Its not safe to keep doing this to ourselves. We are cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Edit: I think a simple solution to figuring out if the process is causing this would be to stop fracking for a year and see if the gas levels in the water decrease.
