Cool walk this morning

I walk my dog on "the bluff" near my house a couple mornings every week before I go to work. This morning, I tought I heard an Osprey call. But when I looked up, it was a bald eagle. Then there was another one. Then one more. Two of them landed in a tree nearby, so I was able to walk up to the tree and get a good look at them before they flew away. I've seen eagles tons of times before but this was still pretty cool.

BTW, eagles sound way different in real life than they do in the movies. They sound more like a seagull than a hawk. Kind of wimpy sounding, actually, which is probably why the movies always give them hawk voices. Hopefully this will embed:

Whale meat sting

Oscar Winners Try to Keep Whale Off Sushi Plates

Quote

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — It is sport among black belt sushi eaters here to see just how daring one’s palate can be. But even among the squid-chomping, roe-eating and uni-nibbling fans, whale is almost unheard of on the plate. It also happens to be illegal.

Yet with video cameras and tiny microphones, the team behind Sunday’s Oscar-winning documentary film “The Cove” orchestrated a Hollywood-meets-Greenpeace-style covert operation to ferret out what the authorities say is illegal whale meat at one of this town’s most highly regarded sushi destinations.

When I lived in Palau one of the things I ended up being responsible for was enforcement of the country's wildlife protection laws. One of the biggest cases I had was a case in which the defendants had illegally harvested several endangered sea turtles. After a two week trial one of them was sentenced to 5 years in prison, which for Palau was almost unheard of. So this sort of story always catches my eye.

Also, this is kind of funny:

Quote

Video of their meal shows the two activists, both vegan, being served what the waitress can be heard calling “whale” — thick pink slices — that they take squeamish bites of before tossing into a Ziploc bag in a purse.

The samples were sent to Scott Baker, associate director of the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University. Professor Baker said DNA testing there revealed that the samples sent to him were from a Sei whale, which are found worldwide and are endangered but are sometimes hunted in the North Pacific under a controversial Japanese scientific program.

Pulled pr0k advice needed

I plan on making a pulled pr0k this Saturday with a pre-rub Friday night. The plan it to start the charcoal in the Weber kettle at 3am, put 2 pr0k shoulders on around 3:30am, and let them go indirect until around 5pm. Of course: mopping, soaked hickory adds, rotation, fat trimmed a little and cap up.

The question is the finish. If I target 6pm to eat, I was thinking of taking the shoulders off around 4:30pm, wrap them in foil, and let them sit for about 1 hour. After the hour to allow juices to return, I was going to work on the separation and filling the serving platters and saucing.

My concerns:

1. The temps will be in the 40's to 50's. I plan on banking coals and throttling the top vent.
2. Is the 1 hour rest time right?
3. If Joose/Max/FourLoko consumption at 9am dangerous?

So you think you are having a tough day

I just spent 2 hours attempting (and failing) to get a woman in her early 20s with a 4 mo old, 6 year old, 7 year old a place to stay for the night. They are homeless ... You know the ones without a car to sleep in, no friends or family that will or can take them in any more at risk of being evicted themself type of homeless. All of the women & family shelters have a 2+ week waitlist and all phone numbers for the hotel voucher programs go straight to a message saying sorry we have no money right now. What is wrong with the country when a child especially a 4 mo old has to sleep on the street in the rain?

THIS COUNTRY NEEDS MORE EMERGENCY SAFETYNET SERVICES RIGHT NOW, but I don't have time to think about it cause I have to call a woman back and try and get her 6 mo old back from baby's daddy's mom because the father won't give the baby back to the mom. Since dad has a history of dv with mom this could get messy. Dad's name is on the birth cert and no parenting plan is in place so he has every legal right to keep the baby to piss mom off. If it gets messy chances are I'll have to find mom and baby a shelter and DV shelters are just a little easier to get someone into.

There is zero chance I'm getting out of the office before late ... Real late

I am in charge of picking up, setting out, and cleaning up after tonight's office meal. Part of the clean up is running the dishwasher. I haven't a frickin' clue on dishwashers. Absolutely no idea. I have only loaded and unloaded a dishwasher. I am sure it was reloaded after I was done to ensure everything got cleaned. No clue on where to put the soap or how to turn the thing on.
This could be embarrassing...

Final Fantasy XIII

So the new Final Fantasy is out. IGN review here
Over the years I've been, I guess, a bit of a Final Fantasy fanboy. I've played 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 10-2, plus Tactics and Tactics Advance. I didn't play 11 because it was an MMO and I don't like people. I wanted to play 12, but my PS2 broke before it came out and I never replaced it.

I was pretty happy when they anounced that this would be comming out for XBOX360 because I have no interest in buying another system. After reading the reviews I'm not so sure that I'm going to get this one. The thing I hated about 10 was the fact that it was so linear, with no overworld map. Now it looks like this is more of the same.

Has anybody played it yet? Anybody have any interest in this one?

Last year we ran a call where a young woman was assaulted. Got on scene and blood everywhere. The ex bf guy was so jealous of her new relationship he was going to make sure to hurt her. He mutilated her lower woman parts. Very disturbing call. The jury just sentenced this asshole. The best under the law this guy could get was 9yrs. And he got it. The other disturbing thing is the dude denied this the whole time regardless of evidence. At the guys sentencing, he stood up to the courtroom and smugged, still denying it. I hope the guys in prison cut his junk off and stuff it in his mouth.

when i first heard this i thought "awesome, this would be great!!" but then I read some articles for myself and see that andy ried would require a 1st round draft pick to part with mcnabb, so I'm not sure if I want it or not. I guess a great franchise QB is worth a 1st round pick, but mcnabb has always lacked that IT factor that's worth the 1st round pick IMO. I'm torn on this, please dicsuss (oh also they got rid of derek anderson, and picked up seneca wallace. they are also rumored to maybe have quinn on the trading block, and they are also talking to jake delhomme)
