Biofine clear

Any one used this? I just got some to try and had a real hazy kolsch that I added it to. I had some beer left and threw it in a mason jar with a bit of the biofine and it started clearing in about an hour. I have used gelatin before with mixed results and I will be curious to see how this works.

More on fruit beers...

I have mentioned this before (ChadM, are you reading this?) but I have struck out with fruit beers where real fruit has been used. As a result, I have made beers with various fruit extracts that have been better, but not stellar. Earlier this year I tried making a fruit beer with some fresh raspberries (frozen, thawed, blended, heated, added to the secondary, beer racked on top, etc.) and there is always a secondary fermentation that kicks in and dries out the beer. This latest attempt was the same... dry, jet-fuel, wine-like flavor. I feel like there has to be something going on here that I am missing. Do you mash ultra-high so the sweetness offsets the dryness of the fruit? Do you kill the yeast with something so that there's no secondary fermentation? Add the fruit to a COLD secondary so the yeast doesn't kick back in? Is there anyone out there that has gone down this road? I have 4 or 5 lbs of fresh blackberries that I froze and was going to use in a beer. They're still in the freezer because I'm reluctant to try another fruit beer! Cheers.

As some who follow the PH may know, I'm considering moving onto a boat full-time, but don't want the potential move to impact my brewing habit. While considering the move I began thinking about the chemicals we use, and I began wondering if there are any options that can be considered 'grey water' or if I'd have to pump into a holding tank for proper waste treatment. Any insights are appreciated.
Can bottle caps be recycled?

Anyone have a definitive answer? I've searched the inter-webs and found...
It's steel and can't be recycled
vs
It's aluminum and can be recycled
It's got a plastic liner which can't be separated and so it can't be recycled
vs
The plastic liner melts off and isn't a problem.
So....should I throw them in the trash or the recycle bin?

I need a cheap beer
I am tired of overhopped american beers that taste like grASS.
About all I can drink anymore is Warsteiner and Guiness.
Are there any cheap beers that are similar to either of the above?

How much KMETA?

I'm going to smash up 10 lbs of blueberries to put in some 8% mead. As I understand it, the process is to add KMETA to the fruit and let it sit for a day or two, then rack on top.
Is there a calculator somewhere for how much KMETA to add? I'm also assuming I dissolve it in as little water as it will dissolve in.

I don't think this has been posted here, but Sean Paxton has a new podcast on the brewing network - The homebrewed chef. I just listened to the first episode and it shows serious promise.

From Chris Black:
Howdy Folks,
Well it's nearly GABF time, so of course our cable modem totally bit the dust.
All of the factory installed smoke was let out of it. I have come to the
conclusion that this factory installed smoke is the most important component of
any electronic apparatus, if you let it out of the machine, it doesn't work any
more. I'm trying to work out how to put the smoke back in the machine, but so
far I have been unable to capture ALL of the smoke to be able to test this
theory (let alone come up with an effective way to actually get it back into the
machine).
but I digress...
So here's the Lineup so far :
2010 GABF Schedule:
Monday September 13th
5pm – 13th Annual GABF Kickoff Tapping Party
When the Countdown Clock Reaches Zero, We will tap into 10-12 special beers to
unofficially start the 2010 GABF Week. We save Kegs just for the GABF Week &
Brewers from all over send in some of their more rare offerings, this is when we
start tapping into them.
Wednesday September 15th
5pm – Left Hand/Terrapin Brewing Oxymoron.
Number 3 in a series of Collaborative Beers between Left Hand Brewing & Terrapin
Brewing. Oxymoron is an American-style IPA brewed with three German malts, six
German hop varieties, and a lager yeast strain.
9pm – Shelton Brothers Tapping.
Shelton Brothers Imports & Distributes some of the most distinctive & iconic
beers on the planet. We will be tapping into 3 different kegs from their
extensive portfolio.
10pm – Odell Brewing Cask of Baltic Porter.
Doug Odell & his brewer’s have been playing around a lot lately on their 5
Barrel Pilot System, coming out with quite a few different offerings. They are
bringing us a cask of their Baltic Porter that, so far hasn’t really made it out
of the brewery’s tap room.
Thursday September 16th
2pm – Boulevard Dark Truth Stout.
What do you get when you make an Imperial Stout with Barley, Wheat, Oats & Rye,
then ferment it with a Belgian Yeast Strain – Dark Truth Stout. From Boulevard’s
Smokestack Series, some of the very few kegs made will be showing up here.
4pm – Rogue Double Chocolate & John John Ale
John Maier is sending us some of his limited draft of Double Chocolate Stout (an
8% version of their Chocolate Stout) & John John Ale.
10pm – Stone Brewing Stash
So in past years I’ve raided Greg Koch’s private stash a bit, so this year I’m
Bringing out some of My stash of their beers that I’ve been hoarding like some 2
yr old Russian Imperial Stout & some Vertical Epics. Hmmm Let’s see what else is
waaay in the Back…
Friday September 17th
Noon – Sierra Nevada Estate Harvest ‘Kill-a-Keg’.
Join Us for one of the craziest events of the year. We will see how long it
takes us to pour a keg of Sierra Nevada’s Estate Harvest Ale. Normally we do
this with regular Harvest Ale, But this year, since the GABF is so early, it’s
not ready, but their Estate Harvest Ale is. Estate Harvest Ale is a Wet-Hopped
Ale (the hops are picked & thrown directly into the brew kettle without drying
them first) made with Hops & Barley from their own fields near the brewery.
Wet-Hopped beers Celebrate the fresh Harvest & have a slightly grassy nose that
is unique & fleeting. Last year we were able to pour the keg in only 12 minutes,
beating our previous record set in 2008 of 15:04. See if we can better our mark.
Chris has been training for this since last year, he’s been on a strict training
regimen of beer pouring & drinking with his training partners (pretty much
anyone that will sit next to him), let’s see if it pays off.
2pm – New Holland Brewing/Mutineer Magazine ‘A Child’s Right’ Benefit
New Holland Brewing and Mutineer Magazine bring you some spectacular beers
including a limited release Collaborative beer & other special New Holland Beers
(like a cask of Dragon’s Milk) as well as Hopquila (a 100% Barley Malt wash,
double distilled then infused with Centennial Hops). Proceeds from this event
will benefit ‘A Child’s Right’ a charity that works on providing water
filtration for children in Nepal.
4pm – Anderson Valley Brewing Heee’s Baaack !
So after a multi-year Hiatus Brewing in Singapore, Fal Allen is back at Anderson
Valley, Let’s try out some of their Harder-to-find beers on draft like Brother
David’s Double & Imperial IPA.
10 pm – Avery Brewing Rarities.
We’re pulling out some rarities from the vaults at Avery, like a keg of last
year’s Moloch and a couple of other’s you won’t find on the shelf at your local
good beer store.
Saturday September 18th
10pm – New Belgium Brewing 9th Annual ‘Love’ Fest
We’re Getting into some of my stash of La Folie kegs as well as some
double-secret barrels of sour beers from the back corners of the New Belgium
Brewery. Heck I’m not even allowed to mention one of the beers in print or talk
about it until the day we’re going to pour it.
I'll be updating the website tomorrow to list these events.

Hey all,
My fiancée works for a local online magazine and I was talking to the boss and he asked if I was interested in writing a monthly beer article for them. I just wanted to send this out for anyone who was interested in reading it...
It's really just a super short discussion about one beer that is tailored to people who haven't been exposed to a lot of craft beer.
