Was transferring my competition beer to a keg last night and noticed a lot of bubbles where the hose meets the racking cane. So I tried to make sure the hose was snug and snapped the bend in half inside of the hose. I did the best I could by holding my hand around it, during the rest of the siphon but I'm sure oxidation is going to be on my score sheet.
Stupid auto siphon

I can't understand why people use those things. Siphoning is so easy, why complicate it?

how the heck did you manage that?

They've always worked well for me. Never had an issue until now.

No clue. I barely pushed on it and SNAP. I know I'm a big, oafish lout of a man but I'm not that strong.

I just never had any trouble with siphoning so I've never tried one.

Racking cane and tubing filled with water. Nothin' special.

Funny. Having gotten into this hobby only 2 years ago I've never used anything but an auto-siphon. Wouldn't even know how to do it the regular way.

Yep, still use an SS racking cane and tubing. I have broken two auto-siphons so enough is enough.
same here. i use either negative pressure or CO2 to get things started and then I generally let gravity take over.

Stainless is on the purchase list.

Mine has to be 10 years old, at least. The one time I broke the autosiphon I cracked the tubing like you did. The second time the outer (larger) part of the rig rolled off the counter onto the tile floor and broke. Maybe they're cheaply made, maybe they weaken with the hot cleanser and then cool sanitizer... not sure but they're not exactly "built tough".Stainless is on the purchase list.

That's all I've ever used, too. Though I usually just use the Starsan that's in the tube from sanitizing, unless I break the siphon somehow (i.e., trip over something and knock the tubing out onto the floor.) I've only ever seen an autosiphon in the package at the LHBS.

I will say... it's a nice little toy and it works nicely. Just pump it a couple of times and... autosiphon. I really like the way it works, I just don't like the way it lasts. Or doesn't last. That's all I've ever used, too. I broke 2 autosiphons, but never the racking cane part. I dropped one and cracked the outer tube and then one day trying to clean the bottom of the tube that I couldn't reach from the open end I pushed a small brush up from the bottom and broke the valve. At least now I know how they work.
EDIT: I forgot to add that I went to the plastic Speidel fermenter so now its gravity feed in and gravity feed out.

I am on my second or third Auto-syphon plastic. I have the SS (which i have not yet used) .Someone please make a video of how you do it and post it on the youtubes. Watching the Austin homebrew guy put his mouth on the end of the hose is not fun.(saying i could contaminate my beer this way)
I am always afraid to put the water or starsan in the beer. For now i am careful with my latest auto-Syphon and have not broken it yet. I have yet to find a good video of this procedure.
