def let us know what you think.  this will be a great beer for getting a feel for victory since there isn't much to get in the way.

Agreed, I haven't ever used Victory malt except for in my Brown ales.  With those, it's hard to pull out the flavors of it because there is so much more going on.

I like the look of the recipe though.  Very simple in terms of malt but the victory adds nice complexity without adding a lot of crystal like sweetness.

I'm really curious to see how it comes out.  You should definitely send me some so I can give it an expert review.  ;)

I'll always have a great deal of affection for Harpoon. I went to the first Harpoon Oktoberfest, back around 1990. Me and my friends were 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th in line, IIRC, and hundreds of people showed up. These days thousands show for their multiple festivals.

On that day, the only other brewery in Boston was the gone and lamented Commonwealth Brewing Company brewpub, where Todd Mott (creator of the American Mild and Catherine the Great, as well as Harpoon's IPA) once brewed, with the Cambridge Brewing Company brewpub across the river. Sam Adams was around, but wouldn't have a brewery in Boston for 8 more years. So, Harpoon was the first production brewery in Boston since Haffenreffer closed in 1964, and Harpoon possesses Massachusetts Brewing Permit #001.

A little bit of a thread bump.

I brewed 10 gallons of this one.  Put one keg on tap in the home bar and the other I took a 4th of July party.

The beer turned out really well but not quite as hop forward as I was hoping.  I would dial back the Victory malt even more than I did.  I had one pound for a 12 gallon batch and would probably cut than in half if I were to brew it again.  I think the sweetness from the Victory malt over took what I was hoping to get from the hops.

I liked the hops I used (EKG's and Liberty in the DH), just needed a bit more of them.  I would sub Cascades into the flavor addition and dry hop with about a 1/3 more Liberty or EKG's.

Good beer though and it was extremely well received on the 4th!  The keg blew in about two hours...

that sounds like a lot of victory malt.  that would be over a pound yes?  I probably wouldn't use more than half a pound.

byo says a pound of victory for 5 gallons so what do I know?

I hate to say I told you so but.... ;)

There is only one way to really appreciate this stuff though.  I've added more special roast than I should before as well.  Based on that experience I took it easy with the victory malt which is similar.

Some of the specialty malts can get REALLY overpowering if you're not careful.  Well, all of them I guess, but they all have kind of different 'limits' so it can be tough to tell.

I haven't used too many that aren't various crystals but this is def true for special roast/victory.
