Hello,

I have been reading a bit and am not sure what the best way to bottle from a keg.

I am thinking about adding co2 purge to my filling process.

So If I purge bottle with co2, then fill from tap/wand, then do I create foam and cap or is it better to a fill remaining one inch of head space with co2 since it is heavier than air, and quickly cap?

What do you all with a beer gun or counter pressure fillers do?

My end goal is to have bottles that go "phiist" when they open :) and not get dinged in competitions.

thanks haeffnkr

I don't know why, but your name reminds me of Kevin Heffernan.

I use the beer gun. I purge, fill, quick squirt per the directions blichmann came up with. Sometimes there is foam, sometimes not. Depends on the carbonation level of the beer.

My experience with the beer gun is that there is generally a little foam, and I get that cap on there immediately. I always get the pssssft.

Do you fill the remaining head space with co2 or does the foam fill the head space?

thanks Kevin

If you don't pre-purge with CO2 you will get a little oxygen in the beer. If you're sending it in for a comp or bottling for long term storage, i'd purge with CO2. For your own supply i wouldn't worry too much, as long as the beer is cold you're not losing any significant carbonation in the process. You'll get the 'psst' regardless of method.

CPF process you purge prior to filling, works.

I tested my new process the other day and I am getting a '' phhssstt' now :)

I hooked up a harbor freight air blow gun to co2 and set it at 8 pounds.

I blew co2 in my cold bottles then filled the bottle off the keg, keg set at 4-5 pounds, with the adapter/racking cane, with very little foam.

I blew a bit of co2 on top of the beer then quickly capped.

So a bit of a 2 step process. but nothing really to clean up except the liquid side, which I just rinse and spray down with starsan.

Very easy and I get a phssst now.

thanks

Kevin

Sounds good.

Kind of what Jkor was alluding to, there are two different goals. One is removing O2 for storage and the other is maintaining carbonation (pffsst! - lol)  If your beer is carbonated properly in the keg and the cap gets put on right, there is little worry of not having it come out of the bottle right. Depending on the goals and end destination of the beer, oxidation may or may not be a concern.

For the record, I use a beergun too and love it.  Worth the cost.
