My first BIAB beer which was a BPA had to get dumped. Everything went well during the brew but when I went to keg/bottle it and tasted some it had a major burnt taste.
Used it to water the plants out behind my fence.

burnt taste? were there roasted grains?
Posted 30 March 2015 - 09:51 AM
Some but not enough for this taste.

Like a smokey phenol? Could be a wild yeast.
Posted 30 March 2015 - 10:05 AM
Not smokey, burnt.
Posted 30 March 2015 - 10:08 AM
So you think this is from the electric element?

Not smokey, burnt.
Burned plastic?

Did you scorch the element or the bag?
Posted 30 March 2015 - 10:33 AM
I think the element got scorched. It was covered in black junk when I drained it.

What kind of element?
Posted 30 March 2015 - 10:52 AM
120V 2000 W
Posted 30 March 2015 - 11:04 AM
What density?
Posted 30 March 2015 - 11:57 AM
good question, I dont know
Posted 30 March 2015 - 11:58 AM
Oh, well I guess that's different. Actual burnt wort taste.
Posted 30 March 2015 - 12:49 PM
That might be tough to find a low density 120V element. Less watts/sq. in. is better.

The length of the element from the hex flange to the tip is 8.5 inches. At 60 watts per square inch, it's effectively a LWD element.
some here too httpss://www.plumbingsupply.com/elements.html

Was the bag on top of the element? You need circulation to keep it from scorching. I've read of other people having this same issue with eBIAB. There's some speculation that the excess fine particle/grain dust in the boil can scorch on the element as well.

He used a pizza screen between the bag and the element IIRC.

Hmmm...still could be an issue if it was siting right on the element.

I was getting ready to link the same element Drez. All SS too.
Dan, what mode is your PID in?
