So, as i slowly plod along with my 2.5 gallon fully auto system an idea popped into my head about doing a separate standalone 5 gallon MLT for 5 gal batches or high gravity 2.5 gallon batches. Since i'm never one to turn down a project idea, especially when it lets me procrastinate on a different project, i ordered stuff for my uber cheap MLT. I wanted to see how cheaply you could make a fully functioning RIMS from scratch. Just for the hell of it, I guess. I'm hoping i can do it for less than $80 at retail pricing. I got all the key components for about $65, IIRC. The question is whether all the other little odds and ends are going to add up. We will see.

I've seen all the STC-1000 jibber jabber on homebrewtalk and it's extremely functional for the price.  I went with a capillary thermostat.  Only $7.  I'm trying to get a 100% parts list for under $80 and the extra functionality of the STC-1000 isn't really necessary for the most basic RIMS.

The thermostat came in with a 12F deadband but I was able to quickly tweak the contact spacing to bring it down to about 4F-5F.  With some more fine tuning I can probably get it down to 2-3F, which should be perfectly fine for a RIMS.
