So I just got done making a starter in a 5L flask and it was chilling, then I heard it. A crack! I think it was a cheap flask. I bought at my LHBS for around $35 new. So know I am making a new starter right now in a 2L flask. I guess I will be splitting this 10gal batch with some dry yeast.

I feel your pain. I cracked 2 cheaper 5 ones before, just glad I did it while cleaning.

I am spoiled because I was given 4-4000ML Pyrex lab grade flask.  They are must more robust than the other flask I have had before but are expensive if you need to buy one.

I do that with my 1L and 2L no problem. I have heard several stories now of the bigger ones breaking with temp. changes.

i do as well.  I boil in it and then leave it to cool for maybe 15-30 minutes and then dunk it in a ice bath in the sink.

I actually put it in the sink first in hot water to reduce shock.  and then I start adding cold water to the mix.

I have done it both ways with no issues.  it depends when I make the starter, if it is going to be at night I add the ice to the sink first so the noise does not wake my kids.  Yes, my daughter will use any excuse to come out at night.

ha!  I typically just take a long time to chill it and put the yeast in before I go to bed.

This was a 5L that I boiled right on the stove top. I think my mistake is that I didn't let it set long enough before I put it in the sink. Usually I let it set for 5 minutes, then run hot water over it, then cold, then fill the sink with ice water. I have done this for years with 1,2 and 5L flasks.

I've busted a few over the years myself. Ever since I stopped boiling in them I haven't broken one since. Coincidence?

I've probably made about 40 starters in my flask and it hasn't cracked yet.  For a while I was using it on my SQ14 but then I just started using it on my flattop kitchen range.  What were you heating on?  How were you cooling?

Stove and water bath. They were not cheap flasks either. Erlynmeyer.
