I spend the most time waiting for things to heat up.  There is also a good chunk of time while I wait for the strike water temp to stabilize in the mash tun.

Why?  Let it stabilize with the grain mixed in.

it's the way I hit my mash temp.  I let the water settle into a certain temp in the cooler and then add the grain.  it mostly removes the cooler from the equation and makes hitting my mash temp very reliable.

Once the thermal mass of your cooler is accounted for it shouldn't matter.  Now if you're pouring in boiling water and waiting for it to drop 40df that's different.

I'm usually putting in 170Fish water into the cooler and then waiting for it to drop to the mid 160s.  sometimes I accidentally heat the water a little too much.

I like my safeguards to avoid that problem :)
