I'll be pouring two kegs of beer at an upcoming 4th of July party and instead of hauling a Co2 tank over, I'm going to push the beer with Co2 chargers.  They make some really nice portable Co2 chargers now with mini-regulators.  I'm even thinking about pushing beer at home with these things!!!

Anyway, any idea of many kegs a 16g Co2 cartridge will push? I'm guessing between 1-2 cornies?

Assumptions:

Beer 40F (T = 278K)

carbonation 2.5v/v

head pressure: 12 psig (P=14.7+12 = 26.7psia = 184 kPa)

V = 5 gal = 19L

R = 8.314 L-kPa/mol-K

PV = nRT

n = PV/RT = 184*19/(8.314*278) = 1.51 mol

1 mole of CO2 = 44g.  Total mass required = 1.51*44g = 66.6 g

Looks like you'll need 3.5 cartridges at that pressure.  Lower pressure, less cartridges, but it will still be a couple a keg.

do you guys fill this up off larger CO2 tanks?  speaking of which - is there a way I could fill my 5lb tank from my 20lb tank?  the 20lb tank is a much better value to fill.

I just recently did this during memorial weekend. I used up 3 of those cartridges for one 5gal keg. I just had the king of charger that you squeeze in a little co2 every now and then. Works good, I will be doing it again for the 4th of July weekend as well.

3 per keg is about what I get. Chad I am out of cartridges but I can lend you adapter if you don't want to buy one. It's not the fancy one with a regulator.

*BOOM*

Be careful with those things. I've had several blow up on me. One of them embedded some plastic shrapnel in my friends arm.

Are these intended to be single use or can you use a little and store away for another day?  I've tried twice now to use a cartridge one day (just a few pulls at a club meeting) and then go to use it a week or 2 or whatever later and it is dead.   I dunked the thing in a bucket of water last time I used it to check for leaks and saw nothing, but a week later....empty cartridge.

Do I have a defective item?

I've actually already got two of the plastic chargers.  But thinking about getting two of the regulator ones.  Thanks anyway!

I have only used mine for times when the goal was to blow the keg. Never tried making it last longer.

No, they're one time use.

You can fill from one tank to another but you would need to transfer the CO2 in it's liquid state.  While that's technically possible, it's not the easiest or safest thing to do.

I picked up a sanke keg dispenser awhile back for $7 in a flea mkt which had a Leland regulator attached to it. Like this one. https://www.morebeer...ulator-kit.htmlI took the regulator off and plumbed it to serve 3 kegs. Last time I took it to a party, I served 2 Cornies and 1 Sanke from it. I buy the 90g CO2 paintball cartridges for it and they blow thru an inline HEPA filter(heard non-food -grade CO2 cartridges may have oil or contaminants in them)Posted Image
