South Florida's morale crushing heat and humidity screams light Pale Ales and Saisons ~ total beach beers, and I've been making them. But at night my wife and I like to sip on something dark and decadent. Which brings me to FINALLY making Denny's Porter. Over the years I've read countless threads on it and now I read it again and again in Experimental Brewing.  Not sure yet if I'll BVIP it but I am going to make it next week as-is with no deviations - including 1450. If it comes out as awesome at its lore, then I'll do a second batch around September to wring in the Holidays.

So, anyone else with a fondness for this recipe?

I have done it a few times.  One of them it was served to the public at a beer tasting and was received very well.

ETA: that version did have a small amount of oak chips added with the beans.

Awesome.  How did it come out in the keg?  IIRC this is one of D's beers that he still bottles.

It came out fine, no issues.  Unless I planned to bottle condition this beer, or any beer for that matter, I would not bother with bottling but that is just my opinion.

My plan is to keg the 1st run.  We'll see where my time and patience are at in September/October :)

I've only used beans once and ended up with the little seeds (?) in my bottles, what did you do to curtail this?

I did nothing out of the ordinary and have not had that issue any of the times I have used beans before.

If I have to!  I generally brew it to give away, so that's the reason for bottling.  It doesn't age particularly well, so don't bottle it just to age it.

Same here...they drop out.

This is probably one I'll never brew. I just don't like mushrooms.

I thought we were talking about BVIP (Bourbon Imperial Vanilla Porter) not Wee Shroomy

Who could pass up an offer like that, I will pm you my address ;)

I definitely want to taste it.  It's the having 5 gallons part that doesn't blow my skirt up.

I don't usually make big Porters, because there's a lot if good ones around. Brown Porters are tough to come by, though, and they go down easy in the Summer, especially when you are just fed up to here^ with yellow beer.

I make 20 gallons of BVIP every year. I could probably make 40 and it would go almost as fast. It's by far the most popular beer I make. Denny is right, even for such a big beer, drink it early. I tap mine 4-6 weeks after brewing (2 weeks primary, 2 weeks secondary on the beans, then a couple days cold crash, keg, and carbonate)
