I've been on the session beer kick for a long time.  I originally tried my hand at a session pale (3.2% ABV) back in 2010, I went to focusing on a lot of German beers and APAs from there because the session beer came out really bad, thin and very harsh (despite high caramel/dextrine malt %, high mash temp and 1.014 FG), I couldn't drink it and I haven't gone back to it.  I've been loving a lot of the session IPAs coming out but I'm nervous about what I got out of that last session beer and having a repeat.  Undeterred, here's my initial recipe:

2.5gal finished wort

2# 2-row

2# Vienna

Mash at 152, 1.044 TG

0.5 oz Amarillo (60min)

0.5 oz Amarillo (20min)

1 oz Amarillo (WP)

1 oz Amarillo (Dry)

Est. IBU: 49

WLP001

I wouldn't mind some thoughts on the hops.  I don't usually fuss with blending hops.  I wouldn't mind something a little more fruity in the nose.  I have no clue about the current hops, though.

I would mash at 154 but that is a personal preference.  As for hops, Simcoe and Amarillo play nice together but if you can get some citra I would go with that.  2:1 Amarillo to Citra.  I would also move the 20 minute addition to 10 or 5.  After a whirlpool that 20 minute addition will have been in there for over 40 minutes and IMO you will not get much flavor or aroma out of it.  Just my thoughts.

I think I'd want at least some amount of crystal or caramel malt in there to help with body.  if you want the beer to be light use something like C15.

I agree with drez on the hop comments.  After my 60 min additions I pretty much move everything to 10 minutes of boiling or less.

Or even some carapils.  In a batch this size it would not take much.

The nice thing about 2.5gal is you don't need to worry about a starter.  :)

ETA:  I'm going to stop by Beer & Wine Hobby in Woburn tomorrow.  You guys ever been?

from the sounds of it it's a pretty big home brew store.  I think their website gives you a pretty good idea of what they carry.  In the past I've called and had them order me wyeast special reserve stuff and they call me and then my wife has picked it up for me.

Look up Cavman's Bitter Galaxy from the Recipe Swap forum. Was very delicious and under 4% IIRC.

Oh, also, I'm going to use Clarity Ferm in this batch if the LHBS is carrying it.

says it's in stock:  httpss://www.beer-wine.com/clarity-ferm-single-dose

I believe this is their main location and they ship from it so if it says they have it online I think that means they have it in the store.

Yes. I used to live a couple miles from them and they are a 1 site operation. Their website is usually a good representation of what they have. Good selection of yeast, decent selection of hops, usually, and not as broad a selection of grain. You can usually find what you need, as long as you are flexible.

I went in this morning.  Apparently they just revamped their grain inventory and layout.  They seem to have a pretty extensive selection now.  As good as any other LHBS that I've seen.

I talked, not too long ago, to the guy that I assume is the new owner, and he seemed very determined to expand the grain selection. He asked me for a list of grains that I thought were missing and also mentioned that he would like to put together a bulk grain buying program with competitive pricing for brewers like us.
