That's good news. He seemed pretty excited. I crush my own grain but it looked as if they had also just upgraded their mill from an ancient coffee grinder looking thing to a Monster Mill.

I can't believe I used that coffee mill for my first two all grain batches!!

How did that turn out?!

~60% efficiency. The first time I used a real mill, that immediately jumped to ~75%.

I had also used their coffee mill for a couple extract batches, which seemed to work fine. It's just not appropriate for AG.

Yikes!  I wouldn't think it would do a good job.  I'm surprised they had been using that in the store.  That's pretty poor.

I love having my own mill. :)

I think they had just been around since before mills were common and the previous owners didn't see an advantage in helping people move to AG, when they sold their own extract kits.

When I worked at the LHBS in college, we sold a crapton of extract kits.  We don't see a lot of extract brewers in our circle, but there are ALOT of extract brewers.  Way more than AG.  Maybe it's shifted over the years, but it wasn't even close back then.

I was drinking the SA Rebel Rider last night and it really has nice body and mouthfeel.  Are they really just doing that with mash temp and some crystal malts?  I have not had luck with body/mouthfeel in low alcohol beers even with very high mash temps and large % of crystal/carapils.  What am I missing?  Is it the WLP001 that I'm so fond of?  (though have had the same issue with other yeast, notably WLP002).

I don't use the 001/1056/US05, anymore, so I can't say how much difference it makes. I mashed a 12 Plato Pale Ale at 156F for 20' or so then jumped to 162F for the remainder and it was noticeably syrup-like. Unpleasantly so, for the style, to my taste. I think I used Burton Ale yeast for that one.  I've played a bit with mash temps and WLP011, and I get an Alt dry finish at 148F (60' plus an alpha rest for another 10-20' and a nice Brown- or Porter-appropriate body up around 154F (20' plus an alpha rest for 40').

This effect seems to vary between systems, since maximum fermentability has been reported as 148F by some and 153F by others.  If I was having trouble getting it to happen on my system, I'd try 158-162F to really maximize the effect.

This came out really nice. The Amarillo/Citra combo is good. Just had a few sips but i'm liking it. Maybe a little heavy on the IBUs but just barely.

I do feel like i'm getting a little solventy character from the hops, same as from the Treehouse IPA i had recently. I'm not sure what is goving me that. I don't ever recall tasting it before. It's not teally offputting, just different.

I'd guess the lower residual extract isn't masking something it normally would on a high ratio beer that starts at a heavier gravity

It's all in the aroma. The other beer i had with the same character was 7.5%abv. Supposedly the Treehouse beer was all Mosaic, this one is citra and amarillo.

after whiffing on this beer for a bit, It *may* be a vegetal note i'm interpreting as solvent or gasoline-like aroma.
