Does the postioning of one's pump impact it's ability to actually pump?  That sounds dirty!!!

Seriously though, I have my pump mounted upside down and underneath my brewstand.  If I reposition the pump to where it's up and down (liquid being pumped from the bottom up), will that work better?

If you make it so the liquid is coming in from the bottom it should help with priming.  I am going to assume this is a pump like a March 809 and not one with a center inlet.

Correct.  It's a March 809. Yesterday, I brewed and the flow rate was terrible...took forever to pump wort from the MLT to the kettle.  Ugh...

I've always wondered why that is.  Doesn't liquid need to be in the pump head to be primed?  If the inlet valve is positioned below the pump head, how does the pump get primed?  Considering gravity applies here!

what most will do is have the inlet on the bottom and then have a hose on the output and prime teh pump by lowering the output hose into a bucket or something and that will allow all teh air out of the pump.  Once the liquid ( water) is running good with no air bubbles it is primed.

There was a good thread on the AHA Forum about pump head orientation.

Get the 815 impeller upgrade.  Makes it pretty much self priming and increases the pump head by several feet.

I orient mine with the inlet at the bottom and outlet at the top like the guy recommends from March. I need some bigger ones though.

I never could get my 809 to work the way I wanted.  I ended up with a center inlet March that is slightly bigger than the 809 and I have been very happy.  Although it may still be too small for your size.

This is the first I have heard of this upgrade. Thanks. the biggest headache with my system is priming my 809 pump.

Can I get this as an add on to my 809?  Or would I have to buy an 815, then get the impleller upgrade?

Nope, it can be added to the 809.  That's what I did and it made a huge improvement.    Here's the impeller... You might as well get an o ring from them too....https://www.tescopumps.com/servlet/the-283/march-oring-viton-te-dsh-7r-dsh-md/Detail.  and the thrust washer, although I don't have a link for that.  I think Tesco sells a kit of all 3.

Ordered!  Thank you Denny!  They do sell all three as a pack...

I assume there are instructions on adding the impeller?

Does Chugger have a similar upgrade?

Thanks for this!

I actually took the head off of my 809 last night and it couldn't simpler to swap out the impeller and o-ring.  I took the opportunity to clean out my pump really good including the quick disconnects and valves.

Now, I'm just waiting for my 815 impeller to arrive in the mail!

Thanks again to Denny for the tip on the impeller upgrade!

I think so, but they're really not needed. Just unscrew the head, take the plate off and install the new impeller.
