Oktoberfest!

Since my german lager came out so well, I think it's time to try an Oktoberfest. Yes i know they are traditionally brewed in spring for the fall, but this is modern science baby! I can knock this thing out in a month easily, but I need to schedule it. I have some other beers to make too and only so much room in the fridge.

I'm looking at...

35% Weyermann Pils

31.5% Weyermann Munich 9L

26.5% Weyermann Vienna

7% Caramunich III

20 IBU Nugget - 60 min

5.5 IBU Hallertau - 20 min

Mash @ 151

Yeast - 2124 Bohemian Lager

I'll have to brew this one in a couple weeks.

Prost!

Did some research last night. Picked up a sixer of SNBC Oktoberfest. I wasn't really impressed. It was an OK O'fest.

What is your favorite? Warsteiner O'fest is pretty damn good.

Did you book through any service or guided type tour? Or just going on your own?

I don't buy much Oktoberfest but the ones I have enjoyed most are Ayinger's and New Glarus Staghorn. Both are excellent IMO.

That will be awesome. Jealous.

We don't get a whole bunch of O'fest beers down here other than the big guy stuff. Not many of the breweries make one either.

Sounds like you may be on to fixing that problem.

A few do (out of 25+) but only two that I've had were good - Rapp was great (he makes A LOT of German beers) and CCB was good. I expected more from SNBC though.

Sounds awesome! I only asked because a buddy of mine runs tours over there during Oktoberfest. He lives here and goes over there for 2 months of the year Sep and Oct and makes enough that's all he does for a living. Books trips the rest of the year.

Brewing this probably next weekend. One of our buddies is throwing a huge oktoberfest party the first weekend in October. He's gonna have all German beers... Oktoberfest, Hefe, Kolsch, and Altbier or Pils.

What is your favorite?

Ayinger's

That's the one! There's a local pub that does a half-dozen or so of German ones for about a month each fall. Ayinger is always the standout. Hacker Pschorr is good, too, but it isn't the brewery that it was before Paulaner bought them. I also get the Jack's Abby Oktoberfest.

Going on our own.  Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, Dusseldorf and Brussels.

:P :D

I'm probably going to the Galusmarkt festival in mid-October. My friend lives about 100 km south of Stuttgart, so I'll probably be near there (any reason in particular that you are going to Stuttgart?) and I hope to get a couple days in Duesseldorf.

Timely. New Glarus just released this year's Staghorn (their octoberfest). I picked up a few 6er's and am having one now. Really delicious. Toasty malt and light caramel up front with an almost paradoxically dry crisp finish and light-med body. The color is almost fluorescent orange. Fantastic.

Oktoberfest is a bit much for me, these days, but I'm a huge fan of the smaller beer festivals in Germany. It's great to sit at a table under the big tent with some strangers and bring a rack of beers (you can often buy a metal 8-pack holder of small beers) and set them out for the table. When it is time, someone else will usually just replace the rack. It's a great way to quickly become a part of a group of new friends. That's what the one I'm planning to go to is like.

I'm also a fan of Frühschoppen, which is when a crowd gathers at the tent when it opens at 7 or 8 am and settles in for a long day of hanging out.

That sounds fun too. As this will be my first and most likely only time being there for this I hope to get in as much as I can.
