That was a long running one, too.  It had survived for, probably, over 10 years.  I think I had gone through 4 or 5 in my first 5-6 years of brewing.  Pour one out...

I'm thinking I might pick up one of those fancy narrow range FG hydros this time, along with the standard full range.

ETA:  Maybe it was pissed at me for changing how I read it.

I like the bottling hydrometer because for low abv beers it really works well for both OG and FG.

Are you brewing a lot of beers under 1.040?

Session beers that are in that range - yes.

ETA: I swear the one I have goes to 1.050

The last time I broke a hydrometer, I bought 2 so I'd have a spare.  Of course, that was 12 years ago and I haven't broken one sonce!

Same deal.  Probably 5 -  years ago.  Cheap insurance.  B)

I recommend to the new brewers to buy three, Use one, have a backup and to smash one on the floor just to get that out of the way.

The new one i got feels way more fragile than the one i just broke. I doubt it will last long.

Still have my original, but I too have been eyeing those narrow-range, "lab grade" ones. I only use it for FG readings. Use the refract for OG, and the proof-tralle for everything else ;)
