I'd been wanting to grow my own hops since we moved to our current house 3 years ago; used to grow them at our last house, but this year, i finally got back in the game.

About 2 months ago, my local garden shop was selling hop plants in 1-gal buckets, so I took a chance and bought one (was only ~$6).

I planted this guy at the base of our family room chimney, on the east side of our property, which has a nice grade for drainage.  The variety is Cascade, which I use a lot in my brewery.

I'll be building a trellis for this plant next spring, so for now, i'm just letting it grow wild.

What completely surprised me was, this plant is already sprouting cones!  Check 'em out:

Looks good! Next year it will most likely grow like crazy.

I've had mine in the ground for somewhere around 6 years now, and it is always impressive in the springtime to watch how quickly they grow.

We had a big storm come by a while ago, and it ripped the trellis from the tree, and with the repair that I made, they didn't go back vertical to their old positions, so they are all slanted now. It is making harvesting a bit difficult, but I am committed to harvesting at least a little bit at a time, drying them, and then vacuum sealing them in foodsaver bags. It is crazy how much they compact when vacuum sealed.
