That's just the way I learned to do no sparge. Old habits die hard.

it likely doesn't make a huge diff in terms of conversion.  basically it just changes how you need to treat the water.

I might hold back a gallon and add it at the end just so the mash tun isn't overloaded.  I'll probably heat all the water at the beginning and just dump the last gallon in at whatever temp it's at.

When I do no sparge, I mash at 1.75-2 qt./lb. After the mash is done, I add the rest of the water I need for boil volume before running off.

I like to do this as well and I see a benefit of heating 1/2 the water at a time because it seems to go a lot faster for example heating 3 gallons twice than to try to heat 6 gallons at once to temp.

Most likely, the only trade-off is that your efficiency is probably going to max out closer to 65%, than the 75% you could expect from a full volume no-sparge mash (or by adding the remaining water just before runoff, if you prefer to mash thicker or want to perform a mash step).

I'll have to check my notes, but IIRC it was higher than 65%.  I recall being surprised by how high it was.

Both of my batches came in around 70%.  I held back about a gallon and dumped it in to the MLT as i was draining.
