Why use extract when you could just use hops?  I wouldn't assume a 15 or 20 or 30 minute boil will yield any kind of harsh hop flavors.

I can imagine if you were shooting for a high IBU number that at some point you might have to add quite a bit of hops which could be good (you want lots of hop flavor) or bad (you don't want too much).  the extract seems like it could help in the latter case.  maybe there is a good reason for the former as well though - I might be missing something.

A high alpha hop like Apollo will act much different at 15 than it will at 60.  There is no way it will be as clean.

I think for this method you def want to go for a true dual use hop so that it can shine in both aspects (bringing the bittering pain!) and being a tasty hop for later in the boil.

Columbus would be a good one.

True, I did pick that for bittering on my 30 minute apa.

How sure are you of that?  Have you used a large charge at 15 or 20?

Some hops might give problem with large additions late in the boil but I'm betting that list is smaller than people expect.

I have read how it works Kate. I have a recipe planned but when it gets brewed is in Flux, need to brew some known beers first.

Funny, we usually use Martha or Sally in that context. Must be a regional thing.
