In the middle of a brew session. Added my mashout water and stirring, and...my SS braid stirs up to the surface. Must not have been tightened down well enough. Never had this happen before. Any smart ideas to reattach short of removing all the mash from the cooler?

Doh.

well you sure as hell aren't reaching your arm in there!

maybe get a paint strainer bag from HD and filter all of the wort through that?

if that clogs up you could put the paint strainer bag in the kettle and start scooping/dumping the mash into the kettle.  then filter BIAB style.

Wouldn't grain clogging the tubing be a concern?

I do have a 48 quart cooler which would hold most of the mash.

yes it would

if you move the mash to the 48 qt cooler you could fix the SS braid and then dump it back in.  I thought you wanted to avoid that though.

Yeah, but probably the most reasonable option. I'm sure I could tolerate my hand in there for a few seconds if there were some way to tighten a mesh bag very quickly around the tubing.

Long shot, but thought maybe someone else had had this happen to them and they thought of a genius solution.

I'll start cleaning that other cooler out....

Stick the braid on the end of a piece of tubing and siphon out through the braid?

I had my manifold pop out once. I just scooped the mash into another cooler and fixed it. Putting your arm in 140+ degree mash is dumb.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. Then had a slow sparge. Coupled with some other stuff I had to take care of, just added bittering hops a few minutes ago. Long brew day.

I reached to the bottom of my mash tun once to rescue a thermometer (i think).  It hurt.
