I'm on of the bucket lovers on the board.  I've brewed with them since day one... just love them.  Love the capacity of the wine buckets (7.9 gallon).  The only thing I hate are the lids.  They crack/tear/break from the grommet hole.  I've had this happen 3 times in the last year.  IRKS me is what it does.  Up until this point I have just pitched them and got a new one.  Well for whatever reason, I didn't throw the last one away and I was cleaning the garage today and came across it.  I was able to use a hole saw to take out the bad section of the lid and fit a stopper into the new hole.  This SHOULD take care of the stress on the hole in the lid I hope.  I think the stress will be on this stopper instead.  Does anyone see why this won't work?

Perfect solution to me. I actually used two stoppers in a lid once to do a co2 transfer with no issues. You should be good to go.

looks good to me too!

The issue I have with the lids is that there are all these crevices due to the plastic molding process (my lids are blue if that makes any difference), and when I am lazy to clean them, all the krausen that got deposited there during fermentation sometimes, is really difficult to clean out.

I still like the buckets though. I tried carboys a long time ago, but then started reading about brewers going to the hospital and getting stitches, and realized that was not for me!

I'd like a conical some day, but man, they are expensive!

Why not just soak the lid in PBW/Oxyclean?  I have no issues getting fermentation residue off of anything with some oxyclean.

I'm usually too lazy! Haha.

I do have some plant trays that would be large enough, I think.

The problem is that I put it off for too long, and then I just decide to do it, and at that point, I just want it done. Your method is definitely the better way, but sometimes we can be our own worst enemy!

I just bought some new buckets, but they are the worst I've had as far as having difficult-to-clean crevices, as well as not having a great seal. Four batches so far with no infections, but I don't really trust them. They're also taller than most buckets, so instead of just setting my buckets below the spigot on my keggle, I have to sit there and hold it at an angle (the bucket is too tall otherwise). But, they're what my LHBS had and I just grabbed them without really thinking.

Thinking about trying one of these out: https://www.morebeer...30l-79-gal.html

Two of those might be perfect...
