yeah - I should really adjust recipes for my typical efficiency.

I'm a little confused though b/c in the recipe I posted at the start of the thread it says 79% brewhouse efficiency which isn't that far off from the 81% or whatever that I calculated going into the fermentor.  maybe I used grain with more potential?  not really sure.

For giggles I threw the recipe into my spreadsheet and at 79% my OG prediction is 1.069 and 1.071 for 81%.

so maybe I had slightly higher efficiency but those are pretty close either way.  I wonder how he got 1.063 with 79%.

Now that i have it entered in my spreadsheet though I want to give it a try.  Looks like a good beer to have on.  I plan to do a rye pale ale soon so I will have some 1450 going in that and maybe I will pitch this on some of the cake.

not sure what typical FG is.  right now I'm at 1.016.  I might get another point or two out of the yeast or maybe nothing more.  tough to tell.

You're in the ballpark.  Especially with that OG!

Who the hell knows?  Whatever Promash told me....

kegged yesterday.  maybe my ability to taste low levels of hops is pretty shot but I'm not getting a ton of hop flavor here.  maybe that will change with a bit of age.  the beer is very smooth and rich with some nice chocolate notes in the background.  it will be a week or so before it's close to properly carbed so I'll have to report back then.

this is a really great beer.  nice and smooth with a touch of chocolate.  I think I'll try the castle chocolate malt on my next porter/stout.
