Do you have horizon, apollo, galena or warrior?

ETA: I hear Willamette is nice and clean for bittering.

I'm not making any guesses this time about if it is Denny approved here but it is a very widely grown and used hop for clean bittering... which (again I am guessing) was the original intent of the Magnum.(if it was german) How's that for science!?

Smutty Old Brown Dog uses Galena and Cascade for bittering for reference.

though it was DJ that hated Fuggle?

you might try Glacier or US Tettnanger.

That would be an affirmative.  But, in Quiet Storm they do a good job.  Otherwise, forget it.

I'm just passing on the info :P

I agree though - Columbus is fairly identifiable as a bittering hop.  not quite as much as Chinook but close.

I've alwasys found Galena to be more harsh than Magnum.

Maybe it is, or it doesn't translate to your system. I've had many commercial beers bittered with it and noticed any harshness to the bittering. Also had a home-brewed oatmeal stout bittered with it, not harsh. But my palate isn't the final word that's for certain.

well if I buy more hops that means the hops I already have sit there longer getting less and less fresh.

comparison.

eta: SOB that formatting went to hell.  but it's still readable.  I think the main thing to note is that magnum and nugget are pretty close.

magnum:

Alpha Acid Composition 12%-14% hops-alpha-acid-composition-13-percent.j Beta Acid Composition 4.5%-5.5% hops-beta-acid-composition-5.0-percent.j Co-Humulone Composition 24%-25% hops-co-humulone-composition-25-percent.

Nugget:

Alpha Acid Composition 9.5%-14% hops-alpha-acid-composition-12-percent.j Beta Acid Composition 4.2%-5.8% hops-beta-acid-composition-5.0-percent.j Co-Humulone Composition 22%-30%

hops-co-humulone-composition-26-percent.

Galena:

Alpha Acid Composition 11.5%-14% hops-alpha-acid-composition-13-percent.j Beta Acid Composition 7.2%-9% hops-beta-acid-composition-8.1-percent.j Co-Humulone Composition 36%-42% hops-co-humulone-composition-39-percent.

Judging by the 2012 EKG's I am still using it's a non issue. The bag has been opened and closed about 8-10 times and the hops keep coming through beautifully. Kept frozen.

I SO know that!  And I really don't think the beer will suck with different hops!  It will just be a different beer than mine.
