Episode 13 is up! https://www.experime...l-and-black-man

Another episode and this time we're here with Olive Oil "aeration"results!

In the pub, we talk our "plans" for Homebrew Con in Baltimore in June - a live Q&A, a Troubleshooters Corner, Book Signings and more! We talk some gluten free barley, a new name for an old country and why some trademark fights make us sad.

A new room is added to the house as we sit down in the library to discuss the imminent release of Homebrew All-Stars!

Then to the lab where Marshall joins the guys as they discuss the IGOR's results of their Olive Oil vs. No Aeration efforts. Can you use Olive Oil to cheaply replace aeration?

We go to Dallas where Drew talks with Barrett Tillman of both Black Man Yeast and Deep Ellum Brewing Company about his experiences as a brewer, his love of all things sour and funky and why he decided to start a mini-yeast company.

After that, we're off to the books as we try and answer more listener questions.

Drew adds a quick tip about immersion circulators and brewing

Lastly, the guys hit the kitchen as Denny offers some sourdough advice and Drew deals with a bunch of nut sacks.

"black man' yeast?  am I allowed to use it?  sounds like a topic for the PH!

eta:  I am joking of course.

so is there a place to see what the future IGOR experiments are?  maybe I'm staring right at it and just not seeing it.

is there a link on the main page for that calendar?  I can't seem to find it.  I guess I can always come back to this thread.  I just figured I'd monitor what's coming up and maybe something would be in line with something I was already thinking of brewing.

I think your sour was one of the only I've ever really liked so I'm not too surprised I didn't wander into a sour beer thread :P

Thanks!  I still have not tried his yeast but I am thinking about using it for the barrel project.

I'm actually glad that there was no determinable difference between an olive oil beer and no aeration. That one had always bugged me a bit as being a bit far fetched. We had some people in the club brew with olive oil and their beer didn't turn out bad, but it certainly wasn't scientific. I forget where I read it, but I think the wort already has around 3-4ppm dissolved O2 in it even after the boil, so the yeast always have something to work with.

I would have liked to have seen a yeast health test done on both batches to see if the yeast with the olive oil were in better shape than the ones without post fermentation.

yeah, there is a link...look for Experiment Calendar.  You can also suggest experiments you'd like to see done or participate in.

Sure, but that's not what we were testing.

I know, it just makes me curious if it's possible that the yeast were healthier at the end of the fermentation for subsequent pitches.

Which begs the question, what other variable or process might you be able to gather information on while doing these exbeeriments? You are testing one process by trying to control a variable, but we always check for a blind taste test as a the gold standard if something is different. Just because that variable was controlled doesn't mean that taste variability is the only objective thing you can check for.

Denny, you gots lots of friends... How about some effects on yeast, PH, dissolved O2 in the finished beer, or other objective findings? You have the opportunity to check these things, yet you squander it. Tisk, tisk.  :P

So basically - what questions aren't we asking that we could know things about from these exbeeriments?

We need to remain focused on our goal in the experiments.  You can't really test for more than one hypothesis at a time.  The experiments would need to be done repeatedly in order to test different things.

Does that mean that having more information about the finished product isn't useful? If you collect the data, you can show significance even if the same variable isn't tested. I know, I'm a pain in the butt. I was just thinking that with your connections you might be able to pull something like this off.
