I have one dedicated line coming off the kegerator manifold for this. That's what I do except with the lid off. I fill immediately after. The sound of CO2 going into the bottom of the keg changes pitch as it displaces air. And then I fill with a sanitized hose from the bottom up. Works here.

I purge similarly but fill slightly differently. I use co2 to push out of the carboy but I put a ball lock liquid connection on the beer out tube and fill from the bottom through the dip tube. This way I don't have to open the keg. I open the pressure relief and the beer flows.

That's really ideal to do a closed transfer.  I had been doing the open for a while and eventually either thought about it, saw it or read about it.  I guess it works OK or we go through beer before oxidation shows up.  Or my palate is lacking..........

Yep, exactly like that. Push out of the carboy and fill through the out port.

Pretty close to how I do it too. I posted a picture in this thread or the German lodo one of my transfer. I will start purging from the beer in though, I have not been doing that.

That's the spunding valve that I have, that doesn't work very well.

the problem I had with the DIY options is they seemed to cost more than just buying one from Williams.  hopefully the Williams one is good b/c now I have 2 of them ;)

I built the same one and it works fine for me.  What kind of issues are you having?

It doesn't open at the set pressure. I have build what you posted (except in brass) and tested it on pressurized kegs. There would be 15 pounds in the keg and the valve would be set for 5 but not open.

I have read the valve is not calibrated very well.  Would the valve open at all?  I contemplated getting that relief to update one of the ones I built and my plan was to re-calibrate it but filling a keg with a known PSI and seeing where the relief opened.

yeah - what's the best way to set this thing?  I was going to overcharge the headspace of the keg with CO2, put on the spunding valve and then slowly back the regulator down until I see the reading on the gaug get to where I want it to be.  is that the right method?

I'll have to mess with it again. It's been a while.

so I've only tested one but it seems like it reads about 5-6 PSI lower than what my CO2 gauge on my tank is saying.  I also haven't had a chance to really mess with the regulator - it seems to bleed out really slow so I never get to hear it stop.
