Iron is not good for brewing water, I'm told. I didn't know that a water softening system removed iron.

Me either. We have a small amount of iron in our water. I've never been able to find a source that tells me an acceptable level of iron in brewing water. The Water book says zero should be the goal, although some of the rationale for that may have to do with how it effects commercial brewing systems. I am not sure.

Looks like .1 mg/L according to AJ

 Might be worth my while to get another ward labs test but this time straight from the well.

ETA: Thanks for finding that.

You're welcome. I just started using a KDF 85 filter for my well water but haven't had a water report done on it yet. It can remove up to 3ppm/3 mg/L of iron. It got rid of my sulfur smell instantly. I have a 20"X4.5" but the std 10" X 2.5" are available.

My one Ward's test was water that had passed through my calcite filter which is in place mostly to add dissolved solids to my very low TDS water and secondarily to remove iron. It is apparently very effective at removing iron because after 10 yrs the pex going into it has stained orange and the pex coming out of it is clean white. Without serial testing I've never been confident in my calcite filter putting out a consistent water profile so I have just used RO for simplicity. Plus it is cheap and easy. But I am thinking a Ward's test of my well water pre-calcite filter might be a good idea to see if the iron is low enough. You can't taste it.

I'm in a similar situation. Even filtering the iron an sulfur out, I wouldn't be consistent due to concentration changes related to dry /wet periods. I use RO as well and always hit my pH #s.
