Except I know I have no iron in my system and I get it, too.  In fact, I know my well water profile is remarkably stable and sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't.

what if the water is the source of the iron, not our pipes?

oh - I didn't know you got this as well (or I forgot).  does it turn really dark green for you?  at some point I thought maybe it was an interaction with something I was adding to my water (campden tablets, gypsum, CaCl, lactic acid) but I don't think so.  the other variable is how hot the water is when I add the brewtan but I haven't paid attention to correlate that with anything.

Yep, dark green, sometimes pink, sometimes no color at all.

I guess that's what I was getting at.  I have no iron pipes, and virtually no iron in my water.

perhaps an impurity in the brewtan-b itself?

the good news is it doesn't seem to affect the final product in any way I can tell.

so today there was no majorly green tint to my strike water.  one thing I did was add the brewtan after I had let my salts completely dissolve.  I'm wondering now if in the past I added the brewtan before they dissolved and there was an interaction there?  just a thought I guess.

Yep,every batch for the last year or so.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a source that accessible by humble homebrewers to buy it in quantities greater than 1 ounce?

When I initially bought it I ordered it thru my LHBS direct from brewcraft? or whoever was the original manufacturer and it was a 1 gallon sized bin full. Maybe check one of my original posts in this thread. I might have posted the origin, but I dont recall right now.

Wouldn't an ounce be enough for about 250 gallons of beer if I'm reading correctly?

I use about 0.8g in the mash and 1g in the boil. So say 2g per 6g batch. I would only get 14 batches out of an ounce. No where near 250g.

Gotcha. It says a shelf life of a year though, do I guess depends on how often you brew, or how accurate the shelf life is.

I'll have to order some to try on my next batch. I hope to brew more frequently with the new indoor setup and smaller batches. The past 5 years it's really just been 3-4 10 gallon batches a year, in the summer. I'm thinking with indoor being and a dedicated brew area I may brew every 4-6 weeks.

It's made by Ajinomoto.  It was being distributed by Brewcraft.  Dunno if it still is.
