I was playing with this recipe and changed it a few times and finally settled on a sort of hoppyish amber lager. I know Chils said that he likes this yeast in maltier styles but the hoppyish pils I made came out very nice and this isn't really all that hoppy. Probably brewing this tomorrow (Saturday). Behold:
S-189 Amber Lager
7 lbs Rahr 2-row base malt
2 lbs Best Munich 1
2 ounces CaraMunich
2 ounces Special B
.38 oz Magnum pellets 13% for 60 minutes (about 21 IBUs)
1 oz Saphir pellets 3.6% for 15
1 oz Spalt pellets 4.6% for 10
1 oz Saphir pellets 3.6% for 5
1 oz Spalt pellets 4.6% for 1
S-189 Lager yeast
OG: 1.050, FG: 1.011, IBU: 40, SRM: 8, ABV: 4.8%
Mash at 150, single infusion for an hour. Water profile that favors chloride and is just slightly into the "malty" sector. This S-189 does indeed make some delicious lager beer and I have made a pilsner, an "American Lager", a helles and now this one and then I plan to retire it. I have another pack of it and it's really nice to be able to have this ready whenever I am. My next lager yeast (starter coming up next week maybe) is White Labs 830 German Lager.
Another S-189 beer this weekend...
