Agreed. It seems like the nicknames those guys have devised are intended to show that they're insiders who know more than we do.
oh, I thought I was being the elitist for typing stuff

One of the reasons I did not renew my AHA membership. I've been on the forum. Just not interested in participating there.

What does that have to do with your membership?

Elitism and snobbery among other reasons.

I guess I just wonder why anyone really cares about it that much. There are plenty of people that I run into online (some of them are even HERE!) who I don't care for. But what if that person (as annoying as they may be) had some very good information that might improve your beer? Would you just reject that information outright because you don't like the person that it came from? My guess is that some people come across as less than graceful online. My guess is that some people (homebrewers included for sure) are just not that social all the way around and maybe they're socially awkward (I'm not referring to anyone specifically) but that doesn't mean that I don't listen to what they say and either accept it or reject based on its merit. I might get a great idea or tip from someone and then come over here and say, I just got the best idea from some assbag on another board! I should probably stop posting AHA stuff over here.
I've been doing this long enough and getting old enough that I don't have patience for someone looking down their nose at me. Our posters (most) here and local club have more than enough knowledge to keep me busy for a long time and not be condescending. About 10 years ago I would say I've never met an A-hole that homebrews. Can't say that anymore and I have no time for them. But, that's just me................

Brian used to be a Greenboard regular, he's very obstinate IMO, seemed like a nice guy, but very inflexible, definitely sheds some light on the LODO phenomenonHe will say nothing is wrong. He is one of the leaders of the LODO movement and that paper ( PDF) that was put out several months back.

I generally don't see issues like this on AHA. Bryan seems to behave himself over there... for the most part. If I see others that are lined up with him (brewing partners, people has done research with, etc), I just keep an eye on them assuming that they're likely to get weird at any moment. But I have never felt that there was any condescending attitude over there. I find it to be exactly what you have described... a forum with very good brewers, no nonsense questions, a high level of information with a laid-back attitude. There is no real controversy there... at least that I can find. If someone's feathers get ruffled, the thread usually just quiets down without any confrontation.Boy, I'd sure like to discuss this with you. That's the last thing we want. If you see it, we need to fix it.

Thanks, Ken. I'm glad to hear that. We try hard to keep it a friendly, welcoming place.

I find that intersting and disturbing. Obviously we're doing something wrong that needs to be corrected.

could just be that people know me around here and generally get that I know what I'm talking about for the most part.

I'll just mention that I have been using Barke pretty exclusively over the past few months and I've made a bunch of pilsners, helles, festbiers and American Lagers with it. I keep getting it at the same local place and when I go, either an employee there or else one or two of the customers say something like, "Ah, the good stuff!". 3 or 4 separate times when I ordered 20-25 lbs of it (I haven't bought a full sack of it yet), they end up pouring the measured-out Barke into the Weyermann Barke Pils sack that it originally came in and two of the times I went to get it the 20-lb plastic container of the Barke that sits on the shelf has been empty or close to empty so they have to open a new bag of it. All of that tells me that it's turning over really quickly and that every time I buy it I get it from a new sack. I'm not saying that you'll never get bad Barke Pils but so far this stuff has really spoiled me. 2 of my sisters were in town this past weekend and I put a new keg of helles on tap right before they got here. Both of them said how delicious the beer was and their glasses were being emptied at a rapid pace. I also have a guy that comes over to close down my lawn sprinkler system and he asks me for a few beers every time he comes over. He was drinking the same helles and said to me yesterday, "Mmm, this is one of the best beers of yours I have had. I don't know what you're doing but you're doing it right". Only homebrewers would understand if I said BARKE PILS!I get where he's going with the blend. I've not been satisfied with any pils malt since my good bag of floor malted bopils(Flomabo Pima?) Every other malt was not nearly as rich. I've been looking for something similar to it but without the risk of Weyermann's crap QC. Rabe got some of the crap floor malt I got so his opinion on it is skewed by a bad experience.
I ordered some CZ Prostejov malt and plan to brew with it this weekend using a blend of malts with it. Way out of my usual style of recipe building. Not ready to reveal what I've got going in case it turns to crap but I think Rabe and I have a similar palate for rich malt flavors.
Ken I may break down and buy some of that Barke but I am still not happy with *shakes fist and channels Khan* WEYERMANNNN!!!!!!
