I want to make a custom diameter coil for my kettle. It's been a while since i worked with SS coil. I've done a few copper coils and they're pretty easy to work with, but IIRC the SS coil was tough to manage by hand. Any tips on making a coil? This will be 18" ID. So i should be able to find something that i can use as a mandrel. Manually bending is my concern.

What wall thickness? My work involves lots of ss pipe, in 1/2" we keep three different wall thicknesses on hand, the two heavier wall bend real nice. The thin one likes to kink and fold over if you look at it wrong.

See if your know someone who has one, or can possibly rent an Imperial Tube bender for 1/2".

I have a 1/2 tubing bender but it's really just for small radius bends. I think it would be really tough to do a long radius bend with it.

Are you talking rigid tube or coil? I've worked with the thin wall rigid tube, it's a major PITA. Kink city. I'm pretty sure the coil has a different temper that makes it easier to bend.

We use seamless e-polish pipe and tube. Comes in 20' sticks.

sort of related: anyone bought an IC lately?

does it make any sense to make your own or should most people just buy them premade?  I know in JKor's case he's doing something a little different so all bets are off.

I think I would just buy one made these days.

seems like $60 for 25' of 3/8th with the fittings on there is pretty standard.  maybe there will be some cyber monday deals.

When I built my HLT I bought a premade one. I'm pretty sure you can get them custom made from somewhere, maybe stainless brewing? I can't remember where I bought mine.

I looked at stainless brewing. The prices aren't too bad, i might see what they can do for a custom coil.
