I wanted to do a 170df hop addition today and didn't want to drag out the IC to drop the temp. No whirlpool - just started recirculating. Crossed my fingers it wouldn't clog.  It dropped to 170 by the time I got the thermometer in it.  All pellets (5 oz) in 11.5 gallons.  Added the 170 addition and did my usual whirlpool.  Waiting to fill the fermenter.

Sort of   <_<  I was out of my usual routine and left a valve open during the post whirlpool settling. Next thing I knew half the batch went down the basement floor drain.

Doesn't work at my house unless I add the HR inline as a filter.

Out of curiosity, have you tried using the HR as a filter without hops?  I have read that people have used bags with rice hulls and I am just wondering if you have tried it.

Never tried it that way but why wouldn't it work?

I am 99% sure it would, just wanted to get verification from someone that has tried it.

Tried this again today. Bad idea - clogged the plate chiller.

How about trying an immersion chiller?

I did that a few batches ago to knock it down to 170df.  It worked fine then finished with the PC.  Extra stuff to clean though.  Today I used only the IC.  Got done a bit quicker but I can't get a very good cone with the cold break in there.
