I think that's a good way to go but I might add a portion at the start of the boil.  I assume you might want something wort like when you are boiling hops.  maybe it doesn't matter?  sounds like a good experiment!

For years I was under the impression that you needed wort in order to isomerize the hops.  Furhter research makes it look like temp is the factor and water would work as well as wort.  I'm not ready to declare that definitive, but I'm leaning that way.

Wow.

Okay, I like to reuse yeast but usually err on the side of caution and go as high as about 4 batches on a single blob of yeast. I brew on the same day that I harvest, send some about of harvested slurry into a clean and sanitized flask and place it in the fridge until it's time to pitch. I do not "split" anything and I do not actually "save" anything... I just harvest and repitch within about 45 minutes. This current blob of 2124 is fermenting it's 5th batch right now and all of these batches seem to smell, look and taste great which is why I keep going. I have a 6th beer planned and only a bad-smelling or tasting batch #5 would convince me not to use it again. Outside of DJ's 17 times with US05, how high do you guys usually go? Also, do you do anything differently like wash it, add additional nutrient, split it, etc?

dj uses the "save a portion of the starter to make the next starter" method IIRC, which is IMO safer than using directly from the beer

I would agree.

I had been doing that for most of my beers.  This run has all been harvested from the conical.  I need to order some yeast before I get burned

That's an unbelievable run. I usually stop before I get burned because I hate getting burned. I've also had the issue where a certain blob of yeast just doesn't seem up to the task but now I've made 3 beers with it and they all come out subpar... not contaminated necessarily but just off a little bit. On the day that I transfer this batch #5 from primary, I will be taking a big whiff and possibly a taste just to make sure the 2124 is ready and willing. If not, S-189 is standing by.
