Many overzealous budding BJCP judges detect diacetyl or oxidation or <insert random off-flavor here> in every beer to make themselves feel smart.
 
I've been a judge for like 11 years or something.  Those days are long past for me.

I didn't mean to suggest that someone would pick up those characters to make themselves feel smart. I meant to say that there are people who are genuinely more sensitive to certain characters than other people might be where other people may drink that same beer and not notice it.
