American Amber Ale
8.5 lbs Rahr Pale Ale Malt
4 ounces Special B
4 ounces British Crystal Dark #2 (Fawcett)
1 ounce Midnight Wheat
.45 ounces Nugget 14.6% pellets for 60
.5 oz Nugget 14.6% for 10
.5 oz Nugget 14.6% for 5
.5 oz Nugget 14.6% for 1
1056 American Ale yeast
OG: 1.050, FG: 1.012, IBU: 45, SRM: 14, ABV: 4.8%
I have a ton of Nugget and I used it late in some other beers with delicious results. Mash at 150°, even sulfate/chloride levels. I have some family coming in this weekend and staying at my parents house and I'm going to see them either Sat or Sun... the other day I'll brew. The 1056 will also see a hoppy blonde with Santiam, an Amarillo-Citra Pale Ale and possibly my Flat Earth Dark & Hoppy Wheat beer (w/Citra). My gar it's been awhile!

Looks at Ken's amber then looks at my recipe .. Hmm .. we have different opinions on what an amber is .. and that is A-ok!

Grain bill wise we are really close .. hop bill is where the difference is. I use about 7.5oz of hops in mine

Oh is that all? You forgot to add in the Ken factor.
yeah that is about it. The Ken factor and the Mike factor.
Ken = Hops/2
Mike = Hops^2

All of this confirms that my recipe is okay!
Yup, it will be fine!
ETA: I think one day you should brew one of my hoppy beers as I would

Drez: Do me a solid and post a recipe with my grain bill and your hop schedule. I'm sure I don't have the hops you do and I didn't not want this amber ale to be citrusy, woody, etc. I have a Citra-Amarillo pale ale and a Dark Citra Wheat beer coming up. Just pretend that you would use Nugget at 14.6% for ALL the late hops. What would you do? Also, what ppm levels would your sulfate and your chloride be?
Will do.

I agree. From the recipe I don't think I'd recognize that as an amber.

I thought I remember looking at the guidelines for amber and also for pale ale and the IBU range on the pale ale style seemed to be wider (higher) than the amber. I oculd also be working with outdated information. As a result, I often hop my pale ales higher and my ambers lower. I decided to put another ounce into the whirlpool too.I agree. It's more the grist. Also, we don't need no stinking guidelines!
