That was nice.  Had harvested 1272 from 3 weeks ago in the kegerator and decided to brew when I woke up.  Usually I need to keg and clean the fermenter during the brew day.  Did that 2 weeks ago. And usually hit the exercise bike during the mash.  Not today

Started heating water when I decided it was a go.  Some out of the hot water heater.  Wheat beer so I didn't need to think it out too much.  Crushed grain and did a 30 minute mash.  Fly sparge while I measured out hops and hit the board for a while.  30 minute boil and whirlpool.  10 gallons in the fermenter in a bit over 3 hours.  I actually had time to get bored.  Hit my numbers and it's starting to bubble.  1.050 and 40 IBUs of Citra

When I do a 20 min. mash my efficiency has been on target with any other BIAB I do.

good to know.  I usually plan my brewday to have a break during the mash so that the mash typically goes well over an hour for no particular brewing reason.

I have had the same with 30 minute, the shortest I have gone.

I do 30 minute mash and have had no issues.  The time I did a 30 minute boil, the beer didn't turn out the way I wanted.  I'm sure I made hop miscalculations but it has scared me away from a short boil.

About the same as usual.  I threw in 12 oz of brown sugar since my preboil was a gallon less than usual.  There was only one hop addition at 15 minutes so that didn't matter.

After doing a few of these 30m boils, I was wondering about shorter mashes. So far the beers I have tasted with the 30m boils have been great. I have a brewday planned for tomorrow evening and I wonder if I have the stones to go 30m mash and 30m boil.

For my 20 min. boils I've found that I need to up bittering hops by 50%.

Try it again, no need to be scared.

Indeed! Many pilsner based beers here with no issues. Once you get the details worked out it works great.

Yeah, so the first beer I tried with a 30m boil was a pilsner and the samples have been great. I didn't really consider the irony of a pilsner with a 30m boil (you know, you MUST boil a pilsner for 90 minutes!) but so far so good and I expect that beer to be on tap around the 4th.

I did just that last weekend. Made a pale ale and also skipped whirlpool hops. But I'm dry hopping it like a mofo. Hit all my numbers though and it fermented good. Made for a short brew day indeed.

That's good news Matt. I know that many people have mentioned that newer, more modified malts are fine for shorter mashes but I wonder if using different malts could throw a monkey wrench into it. Other than clearly "less-modified" malts (which are mostly continental pilsner malts), are all other malts suitable for a 30m mash?

My only experience with a 30 minute boil wasn't good...the beer still hasn't cleared 2 months after brewing. With all the positive reports, I tend to think that I did something wrong so I'll give it another go soon.

Odd, never had that issue on any of mine.  The only ones that were hazy were NEIPA style beers.
