I got my plate chiller Monday and my 20 and 16-qt kettles today.  The Update International stainless stockpots are pretty impressive for the money.  So is the plate chiller, for that matter.

Here are some of the system components laid out.  My original plan was to get the entire system to nest into the 20qt kettle (including the 16-qt kettle sans handles).  Looking at it all now, I'm wondering if I can do it.  I think it's possible, but I'm going to have to put it together in some kind of clever configuration to make it work.  A bunch of stuff still isn't in the picture.  Another electric hot plate, hoses and fittings, control components, false bottom/manifold, etc.

Staring intently at those valves.

yup, 1/2" NPT stainless steel solenoids.  I bought 12 of them a couple of years ago for my never-finished 10gallon system.  I figure I should use them for something.

Are they full port?  You are really going for automation.

Why do you need so many of those things?

How do you determine if they are full port?  They aren't ball valves.

I'm going to start with all the valves being manual switch activated, then when i'm happy with the system I'll add a control system to it (BrewTroller, maybe?).

I need that many to control all of the flow paths in the system.  It takes a lot of valves to route fluids around when you have hard piped system.

I guess I should have said not reduced in the middle.

It's a globe style valve.  I'm sure it has much more restriction than even a reduced port ball valve.  I'm pretty sure all the solenoid type valves are globe style though.  Automatic ball valves tend to be very expensive IME.  Actuators that induce a turning motion tend to be more expensive for whatever reason.  I think I do remember seeing some on one of the brewing sites that weren't priced too crazy.  Maybe like 2-3X what I paid.

Even though I'm against FBs for recirculating, I think I'm going to go with one in this case for ease.  The 9" FB designed for the 5-gallon Igloo coolers is the perfect size (and cheap).  I'll give it a go.

Also ordering camlock disconnects and tubing for the temporary connections.  I'm pretty sure I'll have all the parts next week.  I'll start piecing things together this weekend.  I'm hoping to be able to brew on it in a couple of weeks.

That looks nice! Mind if I ask where you sourced those valves from, and approximate cost?

Got them in a group buy from an eBay seller a few years ago. Someone on homebrewtalk organized the group buy. I wanna say they were $28/ea.

I bought the remainder of my fittings, quick disconnects and tubing today.  Things are coming together!

OK, I'm reviving this monkey.

I just ordered parts for the control system.  I'm planning on using an Arduino based controller.  The way it's laid out now (subject to massive changes) it will be controlling ~10 valves, 2 heaters, 1 pump, 1 stirrer for the BK/HLT and possibly a mash mixing motor.  Inputs will be ~5 temperatures and 2 level sensors (if I can get them to work).

Let's see if I can get this done this year...

Valve Layout Rev1:

httpss://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/50235694/2015-03-15%2022.47.44.jpg

Still need work on the spacing but I wanted to get everything laid out properly to make sure I roughly had the right parts and get a better visual on how much space everything will take up.

I've been dutifully watching Arduino programming tutorials on Youtube so I can get the control side started when my new controller comes in later this week.  I need to get my couplings in, then I should be able to start the welding.  Finally got my TIG out of storage.  Hope it still works!
