Either way would be good I think but when I send a sample, I send a filtered sample because that's what I brew with. I agree it would be great to see those numbers JP because grabbing in the dark is just no good. Adding the CaCl and CaSO4 that you added... that was just a shot in the dark but you knew that already. Keep us posted and post the numbers when you get them back.

I don't think a carbon filter will remove iron, will it?

I remember the label on my carbon-block filter saying it would remove chlorine, chloramine, organic flavor and particulate down to .5 micron. Does that sound like it would remove iron? No idea but kinda, sorta sounds like a NO.

SWMBO is going to LOVE seeing me buying RO water...  This is the most feasible option it looks like.  The soften water we have is good to drink and I can't justify putting in a different type of filter.

Remember that not all RO water is the same. The mineral content on RO can vary depending on where you get it and how efficient the RO system is working. Sorry to bring that up again but I was burned nicely by that issue.

Most likely it'd be the 1 gallon jugs of purified water from Menards.  It's the cheapest option locally.  I'll have to treat it as a blank slate and double check the pH as I go and adjust on the fly.  What a PITA.  Oh well all in the name of good beer right?

Just get the distilled so you know you're starting with all zeroes. Use CaCl and CaSO4 to adjust the balance based on style and to add calcium. You could get the purified but you'd STILL be guessing on what was in it.
