Oogie with the Juniper berries. Sorry. What is this, an Old Style recipe from 1940?

You have a good eye!

Sort of, but not really.  The grain bill I have done before.  The hops schedule is new.  The yeast is new.

The juniper berries are to harken back to Old Style.  Remember, this is a beer that is being brewed for a family reunion of Wisconsin German folk. The First generation is almost gone.  Only 3 of 9 left, and one of them has Alzheimers fairly bad.  The Second generation would have grown up on Old Style.

If you take out the junipers berries, what say you?

It's only Old Style inspired. If it is too bitter, I can adjust it before going into production mode.

I'd like it, but I like a crisp hoppy pils

also don't use US Tettnanger if at all possible

Was Old Style brewed with juniper berries back in the day? I had no idea. Neither did she.

I like the grain bill. I think it's got too much in the way of hops at 60 and 30 but that's just personal preference.  Also, I love 2206 although if I were making a 'gold lager', I would choose a different yeast like 2124, 2278, 2000, 2001, 830, 802, 800, 2782, etc.... something pilsnery.  I use 2206 for festbiers, viennas, dunkels, etc., but that doesn't mean it wouldn't make a nice beer.  I have seen recipes for Old Style that call for juniper berries.  One local homebrewer had a handwritten Old Style recipe that had been handed around and it was from 1941.  That was the first time I had heard of juniper berries being used in beer.  Are juniper berries one of the key ingredients in gin?  DS:  Make the beer and let us know how it comes out.  If it's a hit, you'll be the toast of the family.  If not, the family will kick you in the nutz.  :P
