I'm planning in doing the Cream Ale Recipe tomorrow using Masa in place of flaked corn (I don't think I'll ever get around to actually making tamales as planned). Probably going to cook it first but may try my first cereal mash.

Any one have any advice on dealing with it?

You don't have to try. :PI thought this idea sounded interesting and I can't remember if DJ precooked it or just added it. It's a granular-powdery kind of thing, right? Please keep us posted.

no problem, I really should have searched first.

I was looking for something light to do in the recipes and saw the cream ale recipe and realized I had the masa and then saw djinkc's comment. It sounds like he mixed it in the mash. I've seen both "YOU MUST CEREAL MASH" and "its good to use in the mash" on the rest of the interwebs. Its ground powdery fine (pretty close to dme) and precooked with lime (not the tequiza kind) so i could see it just being added.

I saw over there that he had this on tap already so maybe he'll give us a review on how it came out now that he has been drinking it for a bit.

I just tossed it in the mash.  It converted fine and added a nice corn taste/aroma to it.  The mash smelled like I was making tortillas.

Nice. So do you still have it around or did you wolf it? What's your review now that you've been drinking it for a bit?

It's been so long since I used flaked maize it's a bit hard to compare from memory. 10 gallon batch so there's still an untapped keg waiting its' turn.

Really?  I had 4.4# IIRC in a 10 gallon batch.  It ran off fine.

I usually do a pretty fast run off which I think is causing issues. its not stuck just slow as crap.

I have a phobia against yellow beers (and following styles).

This turned out pretty well. It's a little cloudy but I gave up vorlafing eventually. Would work recall well with some rice hulls or in a bigger grain bill. Definitely will do it again. No discernable flavor change.

The gelatinization temp of corn is within mash range, so you really don't need to do anything but add it to the mash.  I might be a bit worried about the effect of the lime on mash pH.
