I used an entire packet of star anise also, the beer tasted great -but you had to force yourself to get past the Aroma. Another lesson learned-  "NOT everyone at the LHBS  knows what there talking about "

I made a brew w/ some potatoes once. Nothing to write home about for me.( red beer- my buddy kidded me because i did not use red potatoes, but the Idaho- )

Man, I knew some guys that would put anything in their beer. I knew a guy in CO who would just grab random berries off the tree in his backyard, freeze them and add them to the beer. I said, "what kind of berries?" and he would say, "How should I know? No idea". Oy.

what stoutfan said.

Doing the boil with a lid on provided some very nasty beers.  I was trying to be cheap and save $1 in propane...

mmm DMS

Guy at the LHBS made a celery beer once. Tasted like a giant pile of DMS. We asked why he made it, "I like celery". Suits him, who am I to judge....

...It was freakin terrible.

If you talk real nicely to Seagis, he may send you a celery soda.

And before you dismiss it... I've got to tell you it was one of the most refreshing soda's I have ever had.  I think it was a brand called Cele-Ray's.

What exactly will cucumber bring to the party?  I can't imagine that it would bring any flavor... and if anything just more water.  Or was it just to say "it's a cucumber beer"?

Caleb said it adds a crispness to the beer

Cucumber has a distinct flavor. Cigar City has a Cucumber Saison that won a gold medal at GABF a couple years ago. I tried it and hated it. It tasted like the cucumber/ginger salad you get a sushi place.

When I was in Edinburgh last month, Brew Dog had their Punk IPA in one of those engines that infused juniper and cucumber. I gotta tell ya, I hate IPAs (yes, I know, I'm broken), but it wasn't bad. I liked it a lot.

I can see the flavor of juniper possibly going well with some hops.
