I brewed this yesterday. I was looking to do something slightly different so I subbed out golden naked oats for crystal malt.

6# GW 2 row

3# Pils

1# flaked barley

.5# golden naked oats

.5 oz galaxy 14.8 AA @ FWH

3 oz galaxy 14.8 AA @ 0 ( 20 minute hot whirlpool)

6 gallons

1.048 OG

mash 152F 4 hours

7g gypsum

5g calcium chloride

5 ml lactic acid

Pitched Vermont Ale Yeast from Giga yeast.

Should be a tasty, easy drinking beer.

Yeah that looks really nice. Have you made this before or is this a new one for you? I have used GNO but never used flaked barley. Obviously flaked barley will keep your grist lighter in color and flavor but do you get any mouthfeel characteristics from it or is that overblown? Other reasons you like it?

ETA: I have a similar pale I am brewing tonight. Ill post that one too.

First time for this one. I've used Galaxy in a Saison but not in an APA. It's the first time with this yeast and first time using GNO in a pale ale. Lot's o firsts.

There is a guy in my club that subs in a pound of FB to a lot of his beers. They all have a really nice velvety texture without being sweet or too full. That's what I'm going for in this beer.

Thanks for that. I am going to try flaked barley one of these days. Probably in a 5% abv or less pale to see what I get from it. Update us on this one and let us know how all these things come out.

I use FB in a lot of my beers instead of Cara-pils.  I really like what I get out of it in the beer.

Have you got to try this since it was carbonated?

Not yet. The keg is still carbing up. I have a 2 liter with a carbonator cap hooked up to gas. I'm gonna bust that open tomorrow.

I'm glad I ordered my Hallertau blanc before I saw this. Otherwise I'd have 2 pounds of hops on the way instead of one.

The aroma is huge and awesome in this beer. On re-brew, I'll add a 10 minute addition for a bit more hop flavor, I'd also switch out the 2 row/pils for GW NW pale malt. The maltiness needed to be bumped up a bit.

I can see why there was so much yeast in cans of Heady Topper. That yeast sucks up hops. The first pour after I moved the keg looked like a milkshake. I had to taste it. Crazy hop flavor, much more than the beer itself. It wasn't yeast or bad, just tasted like hops.

Glad you updated this. Can you elaborate further on the bolded stuff? Also, how was your attenuation with that yeast?

To add to what ettels4 said, do you think it would be as good of a beer with a neutral yeast, something other thank "Conan"?

I was really surprised as to how much hop flavor the really yeasty pour had in comparison to a clear pour. The yeasty pour didn't taste bad at all, just really hop flavored. This led me to believe a lot of the hop flavor was trapped in the yeast. I've also smelled some jarred conan yeast and it was the hoppiest slurry I've ever smelled. Also not "yeasty" just hoppy.

The beer went from 1.048 to 1.010. I was happy with that.

I'd have to brew it again with a neutral yeast to really know. The aroma was amazing. I can't be sure if this is all to do with the Galaxy hops or if there was an ester contribution from the yeast that added to the aroma.

That attenuation sounds about perfect to me. Great stuff, thanks. Gonna try that yeast sooner or later.
