Brewed a saison/farmhouse ale a couple weeks back, and tonight, as I go to move the Ale Pail 1° to the lagering fridge for a 2-week cold nap, I noticed a problem.

A narrow but noticeable crack had developed in the lid, which extended ~1 inch out from the grommet where the airlock fits into the lid.  Didn't notice said crack on brewday.

Uh. Oh. :cussing: :1zhelp:   :frantic: .  Not looking forward to dumping what seems to be a promising batch.

This was one of those times I'm glad I have extra lids/airlocks/etc handy.  Some StarSan, and a careful swap of the old lid & airlock for new, and said beer is now cold-crashing in the fridge.

The beer smelled and looked ok; main ferment is over, and it seemed like the beer was off-gassing a bit and that may have helped protect the beer from airborne nasties.

Will know more in a couple weeks when this one get's kegged, but for now, I think I dodged a(nother) bullet.

I don't think it's an issue. I have a couple of lids where there are small cracks (small... 2-3mm) and I don't worry too much about it. First off, the cracks are very small and the plastic is still 'intact' and probably not allowing anything in. Second, the churning primary is not a place for bacteria so you would have to have a bacterial infection early in the process. I think it's just fine and now you can retire that lid.

You are most likely ok, but on a bright note it is a Saison... it could get a bit sour and you'd still be ok, right?

I wouldn't worry too much about a saison.
