You may well be the only person I know to claim they get anything from mash hops.

Listen, learn, read on...

is it worth listening to the second one?  their "humor" is kind of a waste of time...

so finishing up the first podcast and it seems like mash hopping is not really worth a whole lot.  it seems like the mash hop doesn't add much bitterness, aroma, hop character, etc.

That was my takeaway.

Which is exactly what I found in several trials.

The only thing I can say about mash hops is that the couple times I have tried I can definitely smell hops in the kettle after I sparge, before any other hops are added. You would think they may be doing something since you can smell them but I can't say for certain. They definitely didn't add anything substantial. I know for sure I won't be wasting any hops that are worth anything, but it has helped me get rid of some less desirable hops I have.

A trash can will also let you get rid of less desirable hops!  ;)  The question is, even if you can smell the hops in the kettle, do the translate to the finished beer?  In the 3-4 tests I did, they didn't.

I would much rather throw hops in my mash than the trash can but that is just me.  That is the nice part of homebrewing, we can all do what we want.

I think drez just did the homebrewer equivalent to "bless his heart!"

(I'm kidding in case that wasn't clear)

Mash hopping:

Not much bitterness (20% of norm IIRC), but TONS of aroma.

the podcast you linked seemed to disagree about the aroma.

and 20% of what?  equivalent time spent in boiling wort?

Dan Listermann did an all mash hop beer years back and had it analyzed.  It calculated to about 115 IBU.  It measured less than 20.

Sounds like the 20% the guy at the NHBC claimed.

And DAMN Denny, you totally blew by my Deep Purple reference.

I'm shocked, seriously shocked. ;)

Well, those I know who do mash hopping seriously like the aromatic qualities.

Either that, or we are suffering from some intense delusion.

Excuse me.

I have a call.

It seems it is my personal brain care specialist calling.

I have to take this.
