This is what's on the agenda for this weekend. I've brewed a Black IPA and a Rye IPA but never a combo so I'll see how this goes. I threw some mash hops in there just for Denny! (need to use up all this Crystal I have) So what do you guys think?

Like it, like it, like it.

Shares a lot of similarities with mine... gawd did I love that beer!!  :crybaby:

Like a thick dark hop-shake https://www.brews-br...ipas-with-1272/

Anyways, I'd bet that you are really going to like this. If anything I might recommend MOAR! hops at that gravity. Maybe double the whirlpool addition. But I'm just saying that for my own tastes and I'm sure you already know what you like. Please report back with your impression.

Chocolate Rye works well in these.

I'd add a 15 minute addition for more hop flavor and like ettels, add more whirlpool hops. Looks like a nice beer as is.

I agree, I would double the whirlpool addition if it was me.  I have been using 3-4oz in the whirlpool lately for 5g batches.

I am also curious about this.

My understanding is that is adds a lot of the same flavors/unfermentables you would get from a crystal made from barley but also brings additional rye flavor to the party. I used it at 3% in a big black rye IPA so it was pretty hard to pick out its individual characteristics.

First time using the cararye for me. I figured it would be better than just a plain crystal malt. Noted on the more hops, you won't hear any complaints from me to add more. I haven't broke the mind set of brewing 5gal batches yet. So I keep thinking a 3oz addition is plenty. I will tweak and repost. What do you guys think about mash temp? I was thinking 148.

Something around there would probably be the way to go.

crystal rye

With all those other hops on there, I doubt you'll even be able to tell you used mash hops.

So I got this brewed today. I ended up added a couple more ounces of hops to make it a even 2lbs. for the whole recipe. I also bumped up the batch size a little to make sure I filled the fermentors with all the wort loss from the hops. Had a OG of 1.067. The brew went really well being the 5th brew on the new system. And the whirlpool is working great! Final recipe and pic of kettle after drained below.

I tapped a keg of this tonight. It turned out good but not as good as I hoped. I can't put my finger on what I don't like about it exactly. I wouldn't think this hop combination would be bad but there is something not right. Maybe to much CaraRye or MW. Not sure but I'll still drink it. I brought some to a local brewery last night and they all seemed to love it.

Is it the hop character? Vegetal? Chemical? Too much boiled vegetal matter maybe? Hard to say without tasting it. Wouldn't think that much crystal rye would throw the whole thing off.

Also you would have a hard time figuring this out…. but Drez has mentioned it and there have been others talking (on HBT) of a very grassy character they got from their 2013 crop of Amarillo. I still have some 2012 Amarillo in the freezer so I have yet to crack open my 2013 and see. Just a thought.

I do think it is something hop related. No chemical taste at all. I have had more hops than this in the boil and no problems. It is 2013 Amarillo but I have used it throughout the year without noticing anything. I think it might be a little vegetal. I am going to have to find some more experienced palates to try it to get a better idea.
