I got a jockey box from a friend and it was a mess, most of the stuff was beyond cleaning.  I tossed the coupler, regulator, hoses and chest.  Everything else I cleaned up and kept. Now check out this SS coil, it has a double row of coils and at the end it has a smaller diameter piece of coil added in.   This thing is huge and I'm sure worth a lot.

My question is what would you use it for it you had it?

Dan

Why use SS if copper is so much better?

Stainless will corrode less and last longer than copper. Copper transmits heat better than stainless though. Although once you get that stainless cold, it takes more energy to change the temperature of the stainless than it does copper. So breweries would use stainless coils because they are constantly putting the coils in cleaners and sanitizers and they don't want it to corrode.

If you were going to use it as a chiller you would want some kind of mechanical means to move the wort across the lines. So either moving the chiller around or using a paddle to stir the wort (by hand or by motor) will give you better performance. Still, it won't work as well as copper.

Its so much bigger then my old one and with a double row of coils I'm thinking the increase in surface area will make up for the loss in efficiency.

For the chiller or the jockey box?  If it's the jockey box, you don't want to run beer through copper.

Get a pump and make a HERMS?

Although that is taking something free and spending no small amount of money to make it "work"...........not that I am totally unfamiliar with that.

Ok  I have a small pump that does 1.8 GPM,  if I pump the beer through the double coil submersed in a ice bath how cool do you think it would get the beer to?

Is it a sanitary pump designed for boiling liquids? 1.8GPM isn't much, it will depend how much ice you have and how much time.

yes its a sanitary pump rated for 212 degrees.  And yes 1.8 is not much but the slow movement is what I'm thinking will help in the cooling process.
