Is it worth using these at all? I picked up a couple lbs. a while back thinking I would use them in something. Well wasn't thinking at the time that I would have to pre-cook them. Is is worth going through a cereal mash for a better flavor or is using quick oats just as good. Also what is a quick and easy way to cook/cereal mash these?

honestly I just cooked then like I was making breakfast, put them in the mash tun hot and deducted the water content from my strike in bill, and a couple hands full of rice hulls

but, plain rolled oats do the same job, and no precook

how else would you brew a beer named "steel cut stout" without steel cut oats?

In general, steel cut oats are a pain in the rear that ain't worthwhile.  Whether you eat them or put them in your beer, they're inferior to all the other options.  Cereal mash is required -- cook 'em up, then add to your mash.  Flaked oats or good old Quaker quick oats are a whole heck of a lot easier, no cereal mash required, and probably even more tasty.

I do use steel cut oats in my haggis, but only because it's tradition.  Adds a little more texture and less mush to the haggis.  But this is the only real exception to the rule.  Otherwise, steel cut oats kind of suck.

I've used cooked steel cut oats in a couple of beers and came to the conclusion that they aren't worth the trouble.

I prefer their texture in breakfast oatmeal, but since I mostly don't eat that anyway, meh
