I just received my Beer Connoisseur issue for the fall and there is a 2-page ad for this beer. Made with Mosaic and Willamette that impart citrusy & beery notes with a biscuit finish. Seems unusual but I would certainly try it. Anyone had it yet?

I've not had it yet. But have also seen the adverts. Maybe it'll be OK?

Looked at it an hour ago, maybe it would of been good. I could not chance a six pack purchase for liquor store prices.

Although this SHSM beer i did buy feels like it's missing something.

is that single hop, single malt?  if yes I'd guess it's missing complexity ;)

I guess it could be depending on malt.  Marris Otter and something like Vienna are nice for smash beers IME.

It's a matter of expectations.  A single malt beer is going to have a hard time being as complex as a beer with multiple types of malt in it, regardless of the single malt used.  Marris Otter or Vienna would certainly be good options though.

There is nothing I would want to add to my SMSH Helles.

it's what you are expecting though.  that's a style that is typically a SMSH beer.

I typically think of a smash beer as an APA or IPA, I guess a blonde could work too.  Are you seeing or talking about non-traditional SMaSH beers?

I guess for me, in those beers, I am not looking for a ton of complexity.

any beer made with a single malt and hop is smash to me.

in an APA/IPA I'd probably expect a malt complexity somewhere in the realm of 4-6 (scale of 0-10) and a hop complexity of 6+.

The malt complexity of a SMASH beer would probably be around 1-3 depending on the malt used.  I think it would be tough to get much beyond that.  even a small amount of crystal helps quite a bit.

Yes. Golden Promise malt/ Mosaic hop. I had higher expectations. And your exactly right on missing complexity.

I thought mosiac was one of the hops could stand up on it's own pretty well - am I thinking of something else?

I made a beer that was nearly all golden promise once (except for a tiny amount of C15).  the malt aspect was a little bit boring but I still liked it.  GP is a great malt.

I think it can stand alone very well.  If you remember back to last year I gave you a mosaic APA that was 100% mosaic, the malt bill was not a single grain though.

I'm not sure I knew it was 100% at the time.  that was a very tasty brew!

It was and the malt bill was like 80% 2 row, 15% Pils and 5% crystal.  I know, I went crazy on the crystal :)
