I haven't tried any of these yet. If the Tumbler is 'roasty', I may not care for it. Some brown ales are smoother and some are roastier. I remember trying brown malt (or was it amber malt?... I think it was brown malt) and I did not care for the overly coffee-like character I got from it. I'm not going to judge Tumbler before I drink it... just thinking out loud.
I remember tumbler being pretty smooth. the smoke character is subdued. I think most people wouldn't like it for lack of intense flavor if anything.

is it a worthy replacement? I haven't tried it.
I liked it last year when I had it. I have not got any this year.

I do not remember it being over-roasty at all. I think brown malt will give you a coffee like flavor, I actually like that, amber did not give me that flavor in the IPA I used it in.

I liked Tumbler. It's not overly roasty. There is a bit of roast character though along with plenty of other malt and some bitterness to balance it. It's actually more like a slightly roasty alt than a brown ale as I've had them.

I agree with this. I like flipside but it is another hoppy beer, I love hoppy beers but sometimes I want a change. Tumbler to me was a perfect fall beer. I have only one thing I can do now and that is brew up some Smokey Brown. My tumbler inspired smoked brown ale.

Yes, exponentially more but I enjoy it that way. It was loosely inspired.

I will be kegging this years batch later this week to have on hand this weekend. Can't wait, just in time for my annual chili cook-off in 2 weeks.I agree with this. Ken, have you tried the Vienna yet?

No. I mentioned in my Oktoberfest thread that I was laid out on Sunday as a result of some bodacious partying on Saturday. Not sure how many liters of Oktoberfest I had on Saturday but let's just say that I was LIT UP. I have my weekly bowling league tonight and I'm going to try like hell to drink beer with the boys but I'm still feeling a little iffy. I am looking forward to that Vienna though.Hey, Basser needs to get in here. He was in the PH (and I know he's having marriage trouble) but maybe some beer talk will take his mind off of other stuff.Ken, have you tried the Vienna yet?

Agree with other sentiments that the o-fest from that pack was… um…. not the best.

Really. Does anyone think it's because American breweries attempt to make German styles by cutting corners, etc.? I know I have had some "viennas" where they're loaded with crystal malt, etc. and completely out of style. I'm looking forward to trying ALL of the beers in the FALL PACK now because everyone has chimed in on them. Should be interesting.Agree with other sentiments that the o-fest from that pack was… um…. not the best.
