First, our club is coming off our 19th Annual 2 day Brewfest. Every year we say "Best Brewfest Evar". But for our 20th we need to do some special things. Not sure how to top it.

Tonight I have 22 people signed up for a Basic Brewing class at church. I will be bringing various malts and hops for people to use their senses to try and get an idea how those ingredients flavors find themselves in the final product. I will have some very basic homebrew equipment, books, and magazines for show and tell. The class will touch on the basics of mashing and how hops are utilized. The class will have copies of brewing definitions and a few recipes we can go through to learn how to interpret those. There will also be 6 different styles of homebrew to sample and we will take a few of those beers while tasting and explain how those raw ingredients make up that particular style.

Thursday night our local brewery "The Almighty Freestate" is giving away second running of their Old Backus Barley Wine. Color should be goldish and have a SG around 1.048. I'm going for 10g. which will be split into 2 boils. The first batch will get Lacto Brevis, Sac. then Brett. The 2nd batch I'm still hung up on how I'm going to hop it. I will taste the wort and make my decision from there.

Sounds awesome.  I am working with a guy at work to get him brewing.  He is doing 3 and 5g batches indoors on an induction burner.  Nice to go back to basics some times and help others out.

as for the second running - one of each please :)

Wasn't sure you wanted to try and keep one. Thought lacto was hard to keep around? But yea :)

I like your church!

Me too, a few other members that brew brought some samples. I was shocked!

We are part of the United Church of Christ a Christian church.  I'm not all that religious but these are a good group of folks to be part of.
