I see what you're saying.

Building on what Morty said, what hops would you use for bittering? Personally, I have no issue with using Citra as a bittering hop. I don't think of it as wasteful, if it achieves the desired result.

it's a little pricy compared to using something that costs less and has a similar or higher AA.  if you have a bunch though - sure why not!

I made an Citra/Amarillo black IPA and it was amazing. Matt1650 drank a metric ####ton of it at Mashout. Although, to be fair, he drank a metric ####ton of everything at Mashout. :P

I've been using nugget to bitter all my beers lately and I've been very happy with the results. Depending on the hoppy beer you are making, if you go really high on the IBU's just get a hop shot. If it's something more delicate, use whatever you think will achieve the flavor profile you want. You don't get much flavor out of a bittering addition, but it could mean that 1% of the profile that sets the beer apart if it's complimentary to the other hops, so I generally will use a high alpha hop that's already in the flavor profile for hoppy beers.

this is why I use german magnum for a lot of beers of different styles. I recently acquired some nugget so now I have that as well :)

I used to use magnum, but my comp team buddies were picking out a flavor from it that could only be described as rotten orange. It wasn't big in the flavor, but it was there. So I stopped using it. Could have been that batch of hops or they were old or something like that.

German.

I've only used US Magnum and never gotten even a hint of rotten oranges.

Like I said, could have been the hops I got, growing region, harvest time, storage, who knows. I'm not saying I'm never gonna use it again, but I'll never use hops from that pound  bag again.
